  • Prabal Gurung Brings Dimension Through Abstract Fabrics And Defined Silhouettes For NYFW ‘23

By: BriannaRose Hewitt Prabal Gurung has once again brought it with his 2023 fall collection. In September, the world famous designer stunned the runway with daring and dimensional looks using various fabrics from feathers to chiffon. With cutouts and simply see-through fabrics, models looked like they weren’t afraid of anything. This week he debuted his fall collection with abstract patterns, warm colors, and a feminine take on men’s wear. Across the many colors in Gurung’s collection, we saw abstract patterns, almost resembling the makeup of a butterfly’s wings. These patterns were seen in pants, dresses, and tops and often styled with a mixture of fabrics. The designer is no stranger to combining fabrics in a look, and this collection was no exception as fur, satin, wool, lace, and leather were all included in the show. All photos credited to Rodin Banica/WWD The theme of exposure has continued across seasons. For his spring collection, we saw models walk down the runway with only a sheer chiffon and/or tulle like fabric covering them, for the fall, it is lace and chiffon. Evening looks consisted of dresses with a simple straight silhouette with matching undergarments underneath. All photos credited to Rodin Banica/WWD Gurung is also known for his use of color, and even though this is a fall collection, he still went bold. The dominant color was red, but pink, burnt orange, green, yellow, and a little bit of blue also made appearances. These colors mostly had warm undertones not making them too overpowering and bright, perfect for the fall and cooler weather. All photos credited to Rodin Banica/WWD A defining characteristic of this line were the structured pieces that resembled traditional men’s wear From power suits to structured jackets, these pieces represent the revolutionization in women’s fashion to create dominant looks while still keeping their femininity. With this structure, Gurung also channeled the 80s with shoulder pads. All photos credited to Rodin Banica/WWD In addition, Gurung also used fall clickes such as fur colors and oversized jackets, but still put his own twist on them through the color, fabrics, and well tailored silhouettes. All photos credited to Rodin Banica/WWD Overall, Gurung did not disappoint with his newest fashion line! He kept his defining traits of boldness and dimensionality, but created something original through the use of fabrics, silhouettes, and colors. We can’t wait to see who will be the first to step out in a look from this new line.

  • Erykah Badu: VOGUE Captures the Neo-Soul Songstress

The March 2023 issue of Vogue is as much a reflection on Erykah Badu's present sense of self as it is a homage to her style that has always been ahead of its time. The Dallas native's album Baduizm has been hailed as the best soul album of the '90s. Its suede-like superlative sounds were accentuated by existential philosophical musings and lyrics that hummed between a love song to the self and to significant others. Along with Meshell Ndegeocello, D'Angelo, Maxwell and Jill Scott, Badu heralded a style of R&B that was about Black Love and emancipation, that told stories as much as it relished the act of feeling. Part of Badu's style was the sweet simplicity of the music coupled with signature additions such as the rim shot, a drum technique where a musician strikes the metal edge while simultaneously hitting the head of a snare to create a kind of musical spark. Badu's style had that same kind of nuanced spark that resonated without being bombastic or supercharged. She entered the music scene wearing hair wraps as colorful as plumage and Rastafarian prints, moving on to oversized hats, bright yellow gowns, loose overalls, strands of chunky beads, and layers upon layers of patterned fabric that was a prelude to the vintage looks that would soon stalk the runways. She was always full of surprises. For the Met Gala 2021, she startled onlookers with a black and white motif created by a sweeping, dramatic overcoat, two hats that gave off a decidedly Dickensian ambiance, and stiletto boots with razored points. The paradoxical looks emitted a comfy but elegant vibe, as if she was bound for the opera once the afterparty became dull. In the Vogue article by Chioma Nnadi, Badu's past and present, along with her idiosyncrasies and bohemian glory is summed up in the intro which states that Badu "likes to wear clothes that make music when she walks." Despite her crystal amethyst pendants and the gentle clarion call of the bells around her ankles, to call her style 'hippie' or 'laid-back' does it a disservice. There is nothing that casual or nonchalant about a person with Badu's kind of intense and staggering genius, all of which comes through in the Vogue layout, where every image tells its own story. The mother-daughter narrative sweetly comes through as Erykah poses with her daughter, Puma. Thinking of sounds, Erykah remembers, "I grew up listening to these trucks and cars pass by...the vibration is familiar, soothing, like wind chimes." Below she wears a forest-green John Galliano coat and Hailey Desjardins custom hat that has the whimsy of a newspaper hat that could magically become anything else on the planet. In a look that is desert futurism, Badu wears a Hermès dress paired with a custom hat designed by Hailey Desjardins and inspired by the “monozukuri” conceptualization of Issey Miyake. Her natural eclecticism is apparent in the Marni x Erykah Badu dress and matching shawl. Here the songstress wears a Yohji Yamamoto dress and hat. Marni x Erykah Badu shawl. • Sculpted Surrealism: Gaurav Gupta Dominates the Grammy Carpet & Beyond

By Erin Moonyeen Haley When Cardi B hit her mark on the red carpet at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, she did so with an innate understanding of what she was wearing and how to make it work. Wearing an electric blue Gaurav Gupta gown, the singer looked destined for an intergalactic operetta - think cult classic Fifth Element - all thanks to an architectural dress with sweeping orbits of turbulent indigo fabric. The silhouette was offset by a cinched peacock-blue satin bodice that gave some peekaboo effects of skin, sequins, and fluid lines that defied gravity. It wasn't the first time that Cardi B. wore a Gupta original to make a statement. In her extended version of "No Love", she wears a nude organza confection with a Renaissance-Era-meets-sea-siren collar that arches from the back of the neck in a queenly prop that signifies regal excellence. Paired with the diaphanous skirt, the ensemble gives her a leggy mermaid effect even as she stands in a field of crimson poppies. As a designer, Gupta likes to turn the world into a phantasmagoric playground, with shows that are pioneering infusions of "light design, larger than life sculptures, immersive theater and experimental poetry." His list of celebrity devotees is growing. In addition to being invited to showcase his style and elaborate headdresses at London's Animal Ball in 2019 (hosted by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall), his looks have been embraced by such superstars as Meghan Thee Stallion who stunned at Oscars '22 in what was hailed as a fantasy biomorphic gown with froths of crystal-encrusted fabric engineered to spill in blue-gray tiers. A true craftsman, Gupta spent roughly 1,500 hours constructing the gown. At the Cannes Festival 2022, Italian actress Catrinel Marion stunned in an Emerald Shell Sculpture gown with a thigh-high slit and a bodice that fanned out just above the décollage in a synthetic palm frond arraignment. At the HelloBeautiful Interludes live cover in 2022, Ashanti was another Gupta siren, this time in an asymmetrical miniskirt with a waist sash that would almost be reminiscent of 1980s party girl glamour, except for the signature sculpted bodice where the wave crests in a metallic, pearlized gray upsweep at the chin. Appropriately, the dress is called the Anthracite Coral Sculpture gown. Priyanka Chopra Jones might have been among the first celebs to wear Gupta's gowns, a testament to the fact that he always has been and will always be popular in his native India, even as the rest of the fashion world awakens to his brilliance. At Paris Fashion Week 2023, Gupta professed that his outlandish creations come from the fact that he lives "in a different universe. I live in a fantasy world in my mind all the time." This delightful dismissal of reality was evident in copious looks, such as his licorice-black snug skirts and snake-like accouterments that seemingly hinting at a future villain in a hybrid fantasy-sci-fi epic. Then there was his flare for using chartreuse in abundance, an indication of his rule-breaking mentality. Like his Cardi B Grammy '23 dress, the runway saw a playful approach with cobalt blue and a seductive glamour with champagne-colored dresses that were as transfixing as disco balls. Either way, the future is most certainly going to be full of daredevil fashionistas and starlets who will be embracing Gupta's iconic styles.

  • Sailor Moon + Jimmy Choo ~ A Sweet Sensational Pairing

No one is celebrating Sailor Moon's 30th birthday quite like Jimmy Choo. The luxury brand is collaborating with the anime series in a line that's been given the matinee-esq title "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon". The candy-colored series has given rise to a candy-colored line of shoes, all of which align with characters from a world that is known as shoujo anime or shojo manga. The shoes are assigned to specific characters: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mars, Sailor Venus and Sailor Moon herself, the quintessential Pretty Guardian. Helmed by creative director Sandra Choi, who, in a September issue of Vogue Scandinavia, remarked how fashion was feeling nostalgic for the '90s and early '00s, the shoes recall a giddy time of Y2K innocence when Britney crooned in red spandex and a Heart of the Ocean knockoff and Coyote Ugly told us all to wear lower than low jeans with pastel crop tops. The shoes channel the show's array of personalities, giving wearers a chance to pick their favorite. There are knee-high Barbie-pink boots studded with crystals for Sailor Moon, appletini-green lace-up boots with thick soles and high heels for Sailor Jupiter; glossy Cinderella-blue stiletto boots with the kind of heels last seen in Hustlers for Sailor Mercury, sequined platforms the color of orange creamsicles with a thick Mary Jane strap for Sailor Venus and lipstick-red patent pumps for Sailor Venus. Set to be released worldwide on February 14, 2023, the fan clubs and fashionistas are already counting down and watching and re-watching the commercial that is reminiscent of She-Ra, Care Bears, Rainbow Brite and every other cartoon that makes millennials get mushy and sentimental. • Museum at FIT: "Fresh, Fly & Fabulous ~ 50 Years of Hip Hop Style"

Startling as it is, hip-hop is half a century old, and the mass culture appropriation of its sound, as well as its look, has made it a pivotal narrative of both American and global culture. The syncopation between fashion and hip-hop is just as old, and the number of hip-hop songs that centralize style are endless: think "Met Gala" by Gucci Mane ft. Offset and "Freakum Dress" by Beyonce. To say that hip-hop stars have sported iconic looks is itself a redundant statement, but it is a thesis that the Museum at FIT proves in its newly-launched exhibit "Fresh, Fly & Fabulous: 50 Years of Hip Hop Style". Curated by Elena Romero, assistant professor of Advertising and Marketing Communications, FIT, and Elizabeth Way, associate curator of Costume, the exhibit looks at the aspirational component inherent in hip-hop for artists to one day flaunt designer labels like Versace, Gucci and Louis Vitton, while also championing their own brands, such as Baby Phat and Rocawear. It also unpacks what it meant for Sean Combs to win Menswear Designer of the Year in 2004, and how important it is that Rihanna's own label, Savage X Fenty, has taken the fashion world by storm, with its all-inclusive models and sizes. Featured in the exhibit is Puma by Rhianna, a parachute jacket ensemble in a soft, peony pink. This look, circa 2017, originated when Rihanna imagined what Marie Antoinette's hypothetical gym outfit would look like. FIT features one of these cotton candy athletic creations, which helped establish the singer as a leader of her own label and burgeoning empire, setting a hip-hop standard where the pretty-and-punk aesthetic synchronized itself to the music. The 8-ball jacket became its own phenomenon, with the 8-ball symbolizing winning, risk and fortune, tropes interlocked with hip-hop themes and storylines. Specifically, the museum spotlights the Michael Hoban 8-ball leather jacket. While Hoban had a clientele extending to rockers of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger and Cher, his stardom had a meteoric rise in the 1990s when the 8-ball motif appeared in music videos and on the streets. In 1985, the Swoosh branded sneakers took inspiration from Michael Jordan and his airborne athleticism. The wings logo signified the Air Jordan 3 and has since "stamped spikes likened to Derek Jeter, game jerseys for the Detroit Pistons, and non-licensed novelties like jewelry and bumper stickers" The shoes also epitomize the crossover appeal between hip-hop and sports, an embryonic relationship that seems to have always existed. The song 'Dapper Dan', written by Lew Brown and Albert Von Tilzner gave rise to the slang term, which signifies an individual who is snazzy, spiffy and who owns the nightlife. In 1987, the Dapper Dan of Harlem, bomber-style print jacket was made famous by the likes of L.L. Cool J. When he wore the Gucci-printed Dapper Dan jacket, it signaled a seismic cultural change in the demarcations of fashion by inexplicably linking the worlds of luxury with hip-hop. Since the 80s, Dapper Day has been an icon unto himself, his Harlem atelier being homebase for luxury designs that have shaped the world of music. The FIT exhibit is a reminder of Dapper Dan's influence and how, in 2017, there was an outcry against Gucci following accusations that the house copied the OG look, appropriating it without acknowledging the master. The exhibit promises a walk down memory lane plus a cultural music infusion that, in the words of the exhibit, emphasizes how, even after "a century, hip-hop is still pushing boundaries, though now, it is not from the outside, but the center." ~ Erin Moonyeen Haley Images courtesy of FIT

  • All Eyes On Them: Exploring the Looks Among Some Of The 2023 Grammys Presenters

By Reya Krishna On Sunday Feb. 5, the 65th annual Grammys went down in history, celebrating the many talented artists through grand performances and touching tributes. As the night’s events unfolded, there were momentous celebrations as award winners were announced. Let’s take a deeper look into some of the eye-catching award presenters of the night. Olivia Rodrigo opted for a simple yet elegant look for the festivities, donning a Miu Miu sheer, slip dress accessorized with classic Tiffany & Co. jewelry. The diamonds, however, didn’t outshine her bright smile as she presented the award for ’Best New Artist’ to Samara Joy. Images from Vogue & Getty Images It was a big night for Viola Davis, who had won her own Grammy award for “Best Audio Book Narration”, and her win secured her EGOT status, having already won an Emmy, Oscar, and Tony award. She dazzled in an asymmetrical Naeem Khan dress, the silver, red, and blue colors shimmering underneath the bright lights onstage as she presented Beyoncé her Grammy for “Best R&B Song”. SZA made heads turn in her black Mugler cutout dress and she took to the Grammy stage in her Jimmy Choo sandals to present the award for “Best Música Urbana Album”. The honor went to none other than Bad Bunny for his 2022 album, Un Verano Sin Ti. Images from Vogue & Getty Images Viewers watching both at home and in the audience of the Crypto.com Arena were left speechless when First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, took to the stage in a stunning off-the-shoulder Oscar de la Renta botanical dress, the silver and gold shimmering like a disco ball. The First Lady presented not one, but two awards of the night, awarding Bonnie Raitt the Grammy award for “Song of the Year”. Dr. Biden also presented the first-ever “Song for Special Change” merit award to “Baraye”, the unofficial anthem for the Mahsi Amini protests in Iran. The song was written by Iranian singer-songwriter Steven Hajipour, and its impact was spoken for with the special Grammy award. Images from Hollywood Reporter & Getty Images It‘s no surprise to see celebrities change into different outfits throughout the night, and Cardi B is no exception to that as she showcased two beautiful yet contrasting looks for the night. Her red carpet dress was a flowing, blue Gaurav Gupta ensemble that debuted during Paris Fashion Week mere days ago. However, the rapper decided to ditch the elegant dress and don a futuristic, metallic Paco Rabanne dress to present the Grammy award for “Best Rap Album” to Kendrick Lamar, and her new look was accessorized with flashy silver jewelry and topped with a chain-mail headdress. Images from Vogue & Getty Images Another outfit change moment of the night was orchestrated by none other than iconic country star Shania Twain, debuting a white Harris Reed suit covered in gigantic, black polka dots on the red carpet earlier in the evening. The look was completed with a matching hat that made everyone take a double take. with She then changed into a skirt suit and cape from Thom Browne to present the award for “Best Country Album”, which went to Willie Nelson. The only constant in the singer’s looks of the night was her bold red hair, a contrast from her signature brunette. Images from Vogue & Twitter

  • All The Show-Stopping Women's Red Carpet Looks From The 2023 Grammys

By: BriannaRose Hewitt The 65th Grammys are in the books, and the women did not come to play. A ceremony that started as almost exclusively male is now being taken over by women who not only know how to sing, but also know how to dress. From ball gowns to simple silhouettes, the red carpet saw it all. New mom Paris Hilton arrived in a dress jeweled from head to toe with a relatively simple silhouette. However, the top had a bold cutout right down the center chest, perfectly on brand for Hilton. Metallic bejeweled looks were also seen on Mary J. Blige who wore a form fitting The Blonds dress with cutouts on the hips, and Shoshana Bean who had a bold silver metallic collar with her on her two-piece ensemble. Doja Cat wore a black mermaid silhouette dress with matching gloves, looking ready to kill in a latex like material. Following a similar theme, Hannah Monds wore a dress that incorporated a bondage top, but she added a pop of color in with her hot pink ball gown skirt. Many guests also wore ensembles with a very structured or geometric shape. Viola Davis, who became an EGOT (receiver of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) wore a sparkly Naeem Khan dress that’s pattern was not only made of different squares, but the bottom two layers of the dress’s shirt were structured rectangles themselves that ended in fringe. H.E.R also wore a black dress with a unique shape, with the bodice abruptly flaring out, with a straight black skirt underneath. A couple guests took the geometric drama up a notch by wearing looks that even covered their head. Cardi B stunned in a royal blue Gaurav Gupta dress that had structured three dimensional sleeves that partially covered her head and face to create a faux-hood look. Dencia wore a black dress that had a pop of bedazzled blue at the top completely encompassing her shoulders, neck, and head. Blac Chyna looked straight out of Swan Lake as she wore a bold, black feathery body suit that also wrapped around the entirety of her upper body. Winning the night. we can of course not forget about Lizzo. The “About Damn Time” star spent minutes on the red carpet with her orange elaborate Dolce and Gabbana look that was composed of a cape made of flowers and an orange dress with sparkle accents underneath. She definitely brought the “wow factor!” Other wow factor contenders include Kacey Musgraves who showed up in a light pink bodysuit with a matching feather cape, Brazilian artist Anita who added a bunch of drama through texture and fabric in her mermaid dress, and Kelsea Ballerini who popped in her sunshine yellow dress with cut outs. Fans were also excitedly anticipating Taylor Swift, who only has four nominations due to the timing of her latest album. The “Midnights” singer wore a midnight blue two piece ensemble, which the top artist known for her hints and easter eggs probably planned. The red carpet was a strong beginning to music’s most important night of the year with looks we will not forget. All images credited to Getty Images
