With music, adventure, and Caribbean culture at its heart, the show celebrates diversity in all its forms. Words by Angel Neal @angel_stylistbehavior Photography : Disney/Nathalie Gordon Stepping into the shoes of a beloved iconic character comes with its own set of challenges and expectations, as Mykal-Michelle explains. “When I voice or portray a character that has already been seen in media, I usually revisit that media and I think of ideas on how I can bring a fresh perspective,” she shares. Her preparation involved immersing herself in the original " Little Mermaid " films to capture Ariel’s essence as an eight-year-old—a version of the character we’ve never seen before.“My mom and I created this character that resonated with the producers and director,” Mykal-Michelle reflects on the collaborative process that shaped her portrayal. While acknowledging the pressure of following in the footsteps of previous Ariel portrayals, she embraced the opportunity to make the role her own, infusing it with her unique energy and perspective. Disney Junior’s " Ariel " goes beyond entertainment; it aims to educate and inspire young viewers through its diverse cast and cultural representation. “The show celebrates all kinds of diversity,” Mykal-Michelle emphasizes. Through Ariel’s adventures, Disney Junior’s series imparts valuable lessons on community, self-expression, and resilience. Mykal-Michelle sees Ariel as a catalyst for leadership, always striving to make a positive impact on those around her. The show not only entertains but also educates children on topics like marine biology, fostering a deeper understanding of the world beneath the waves. While voice acting differs from traditional acting, Mykal-Michelle found synergy with her fellow cast members and creators despite not recording together. “We all had this collaborative effort,” she explains, “to create something perfect.” This shared vision translated into a cohesive and impactful series that she hopes will captivate young audiences. - Rising Star: Kudakwashe Rutendo Talks Her new Film "Backspot"
She's One to Watch In the glittering world of Hollywood, where dreams are made and stars are born, Kudakwashe Rutendo shines brightly as a rising talent to watch. Recently cast as Amanda in the highly anticipated film "Backspot," opposite Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood, Kudakwashe's journey into the limelight has been nothing short of spectacular. Named one of the prestigious 2023 TIFF Rising Stars and a finalist for the 2024 CBC Canada Reads, her trajectory is set to leave an indelible mark on the international stage. PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHIKANAI PRODUCTIONS & Kristina Ruddick INTERVIEW BY ANGEL NEAL @ANGEL_STYLISTBEHAVIOR Reflecting on her experience filming "Backspot," Kudakwashe effuses enthusiasm. "I honestly had a really good experience working with the Backspot team," she shares. "A lot of the team have been navigating the film industry for a few years, and they all were so willing to take a mentorship role." Working alongside Devery Jacobs, whom she admires deeply, Kudakwashe found their chemistry instrumental in bringing her character, Amanda, to life. "Devery really gives you a lot as a scene partner, and does it while being so kind and down to earth. It’s definitely the reason the chemistry between Amanda and Riley was so good," she explains. Moreover, the involvement of local cheerleading team Cheer Fuzion added a unique dynamic to the set, showcasing their awe-inspiring athleticism. Amanda's character resonated deeply with Kudakwashe, particularly her drive and assertiveness. "We share a lot of traits intrinsically," Kudakwashe notes, "but what I really admire about her is how she’s able to articulate her limits." Drawing from her own cheerleading background, Kudakwashe and Devery Jacobs immersed themselves in physical training to authentically portray their roles as talented cheerleaders. "Leading up to shooting, Devery and I started going to open gyms to get ready to play these wildly talented cheerleaders," she shares. Themes and Audience Connection "Backspot" delves into themes of identity, ambition, and acceptance, with Amanda embodying a balance of ambition and self-awareness. "She’s ambitious enough to have wanted to join the Thunderhawks, this huge all-star team," Kudakwashe explains, "yet when things start getting too intense, she knows herself enough to prioritize her health." Memorable Moments and Milestones Sharing anecdotes from the set, Kudakwashe recalls a humorous mishap during auditions with Devery Jacobs that almost derailed her confidence. "We both had the same idea to go in for a hug and ended up colliding. Hard," she laughs. Despite initial nerves, the experience of working with industry luminaries like Evan Rachel Wood and being part of Elliot Page's production was a dream come true for Kudakwashe. "It’s really a pinch me moment," she reflects. "Backspot" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. What was your reaction to seeing the finished film for the first time, especially on such a renowned platform? Relief. Leading up to it I had so much anxiety, but then seeing it on screen, it was total relief. Like, we made a good movie and now it’s out in the world. But my in-audience reaction was just delight, the sound design of the movie is fantastic and the soundtrack phenomenal. The director, D.W. Waterson, is a DJ as well and you can really tell. I actually think the sound design and overall soundscape of Backspot is so distinct. And in a theatre with a sound system you really watch the movie on two fronts. Visually, of course, but then there’s like an auditory story unfolding as well. Being recognized as a TIFF Rising Star in 2023 was a career highlight for Kudakwashe. "As an actor, you’re constantly working, and it’s hard to see if that work is resonating with audiences and your peers," she admits. "Being a Rising Star was kind of like a nudge of, yes, the work is landing." What message do you hope audiences take away from "Backspot" after watching the film? I really hope people see themselves! I think Backspot does a fantastic job of not adding to a canon of movies where the conflict is queerness. The conflict here is really how far you’re willing to go to be great, and though almost all the characters audiences meet are queer, again, you never see conflict in that. With a passion for writing that parallels her acting career, Kudakwashe is currently immersed in a writing project close to her heart. "It's been in the works for a couple of years," she shares, "so it’s so humbling to be where I am now with it." In a world where talent meets determination, Kudakwashe Rutendo stands poised at the intersection of artistry and ambition. As her star continues to rise, "Backspot" marks not just a film debut but a testament to her dedication and passion for storytelling, promising audiences an unforgettable journey on screen and beyond. Future Aspirations and Challenges Faced "I aspire to showcase the beauty of Trinidadian culture globally," Nailah shares. "Navigating fame was challenging, but I've learned to stay true to myself and my art." The challenge I faced as an artist was keeping up with change. Things change so quickly in my lifestyle that I didn’t understand how to adjust to my own personal changes. I think after I got popular I began to feel like I no longer knew myself, as everything changed so did I. I was always working and there was no time keep up with who I was becoming. I felt very lost and wanted to be able to share who I was as an artist, but I was in a completely new and uncharted space. Now I finally understand it’s all in the mind and that was the hardest part. I had to take control from the beginning and just be who I wanted and create whatever I wanted to create. You will find your art when you find yourself. Advice for Aspiring Musicians "Trust your instincts," Nailah advises. "Embrace what moves you deeply and let that passion guide your musical journey." Excited about upcoming projects and collaborations, Nailah anticipates new stages and experiences: "I want to introduce the world to the rich stories and rhythms of the Caribbean." Nailah Blackman's journey is not just about music; it's a cultural odyssey, celebrating tradition while embracing innovation. As she continues to inspire through her artistry and advocacy, Nailah leaves an indelible mark on the global music scene, heralding a new era for soca. My creative process is simple, I don’t overthink music. I have had many musical influences from Jazz, Pop, Folk, hip hop, calypso, Indian classical, Alternative and Rock music. Music come naturally to me so my approach to soca music is to be myself. Whatever my influences are, let them shine and find its place in the song I’m doing. Soca music was birthed in the 70s, it is an evolution of calypso with a mixture of East Indian and African rhythms. Soca today is now the sound of the Caribbean. I am from the Caribbean, born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, I know who I am and I own my identity in whatever genre I choose to create. Soca needed to grow and evolve naturally. Most genres are driven by the new generation of artists to reinvent and reignite the culture and Soca has been missing that youthful perspective for some time. That is exactly what I brought to the genre with my contemporary influences and I hope to continue inspire young artist to explore and be different in genre. - Echoes of Cabrini Green: Exclusive Interview with We Grown Now Rising Stars Blake Cameron James and Gian Knight Ramirez
In the bustling heart of Chicago, amidst the towering buildings and bustling streets, lies a tale that speaks volumes about friendship, dreams, and the harsh realities of growing up in the inner city. "We Grown Now," a film that has captured the hearts of many, delves deep into the lives of two young men navigating the complexities of adolescence amidst the backdrop of the Cabrini Green projects. Words: Angel Neal Photos Courtesy of: Sony Pictures In an exclusive interview with the stars of the film, Blake Cameron James and Gian Knight Ramirez we gain insight into the raw emotions and personal reflections that brought their characters to life on the silver screen. "It was phenomenal," Gian reflects wistfully, his honesty evident in every word. "Tapping into the character was both easy and challenging. I couldn't fully relate to the struggles of those in Cabrini Green, but I immersed myself in documentaries and personal accounts to understand their reality." Blake, hailing from the South, found himself grappling with similar challenges. "Envisioning life in Cabrini Green was difficult, acknowledging the dangers that permeated everyday life. Despite our different upbringings, Gian and I shared a connection to our characters' struggles." Their portrayal of the characters Malik and Eric, respectively, struck a chord with audiences, particularly in scenes that mirrored real-life conversations about safety and the daunting odds faced by young black men. "We drew from personal experiences and conversations with loved ones," Gian explains. "The line about not being able to keep you safe resonated deeply with me. It's a sentiment echoed by many parents and guardians in our community." Blake nods in agreement, adding, "It's a reality we can't ignore. Even as actors, we're not immune to the challenges of the world around us." Their commitment to authenticity extended beyond the screen. Despite their rising careers, both Gian and Blake continue to attend public school, a decision rooted in their desire to stay grounded and connected to their roots. As we delve into the intricacies of their characters' inner turmoil, Gian and Blake shed light on the themes of guilt and anxiety depicted in the film. "Malik grapples with the guilt of leaving behind his friend and the only life he's ever known," Blake explains. "It's a complex emotion that many can relate to, the struggle between chasing dreams and loyalty to one's past." Blake reflects on Eric's journey, emphasizing the character's realism amidst Malik's idealism. "Eric's anxiety stems from feeling left behind and the weight of familial expectations. It's a different kind of struggle, but equally poignant." Their hope for viewers is clear: to shed light on real bonds, injustices, and the resilience of the human spirit. "I want viewers to understand the tragedy of the Cabrini Green shooting shooting and the injustices that persist," Blake states passionately. "But more than that, I want them to take away a sense of hope and a belief in the power of friendship and perseverance." Gian echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the hidden messages woven throughout the film. "It's about empathy, understanding, and the pursuit of a better tomorrow. If 'Cabrini Dreams' can spark those conversations, then we've truly succeeded." As we bid farewell to Gian and Blake, it's evident that their journey has only just begun. With their talent, authenticity, and unwavering commitment to storytelling, they are destined to leave an indelible mark on both the silver screen and the hearts of audiences worldwide. "Cabrini Dreams" is more than a film; it's a testament to the power of cinema to inspire change and ignite conversations that matter. - A Conversation with Lexie Brown
Lexie Brown isn't just another name on the WNBA roster. Sure, her crossovers are mesmerizing, and her shots leave fans breathless. But delve deeper, and you'll discover a woman of remarkable substance. Brown is a rising star who juggles the demands of professional basketball with a burgeoning career in sports media, a love for fashion, and a dedication to advocating for those facing chronic illness. Brown's journey into the world of broadcasting started in an unconventional way. Her initial ambition wasn't to be in front of a camera, but to work within the front office of a WNBA team. However, the digital age had other plans. Interview: Joshua Pandy Photo Credits: Athletes Unlimted Brown established a strong social media presence, attracting fans not just with her on-court prowess but also with her witty personality. Brown says “I don't walk into the podcast every day. And I'm like, Ooh, what am I gonna say to go viral today? I just say things. And they clip it in a way for it to go viral.”These online interactions caught the attention of basketball legend Gilbert Arenas, paving the way for a surprising opportunity. In 2023, Brown co-hosted "The Gilbert Arenas Show," stepping into the world of sports media. It wasn't an easy transition. Brown has had to develop a thick skin in the face of potential criticism, navigating the delicate space of offering insightful commentary. But for Brown, the challenges are outweighed by the thrill of offering a unique perspective. She says “being in the media space, you find yourself sometimes criticizing players or having opinions on players—it's cool being a current player still, because I feel like I provide that balance”. Finding Her Voice: A New Generation of Women's Basketball Voices Brown's approach to social media is refreshing. While there's always a chance of going viral with a well-timed post, Brown prioritizes authenticity and using her platform to share thoughtful opinions. "Slowly becoming one of these basketball voices in women's space that you know, we have Candace Parker, we got Chiney Ogwumike. But, you know, after those two, like, I feel like it's me, and I'm next up" Brown sees herself as part of a new generation of WNBA players who are unafraid to use their voices. These women, she believes, are following in the footsteps of pioneers like Candace Parker, carving their own space within the sports media landscape. Stepping away from the court, Brown's personality shines through when she talks about fashion. Her style is a playful and ever-evolving kaleidoscope – a testament to her adventurous spirit. Pinterest serves as her mood board, allowing her to explore a variety of aesthetics. When it comes to putting together an outfit, Brown prioritizes discovery above all else. "Sometimes, I have a certain aesthetic to go with a certain hairstyle I know certain aesthetics is not gonna work with this hairstyle or this hair color. And I think that's the fun part about fashion" Brown acknowledges she's not a self-proclaimed fashion guru, but her passion lies in the creative process itself. " I looked back—my outfits were a disaster, they were a mess. But at the time, it was poppin’. But looking back, I was like, What did you have on? But like, that's the fun part about discovering your personal style and evolving and seeing trends come and go and come back. So yeah, it's just fun." Overcoming Obstacles: A Champion for Health Awareness Brown demonstrates true courage by openly discussing her battle with Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease. It wasn't an easy journey. For a long time, Brown dealt with unexplained symptoms, leaving her with confusion and frustration. Finally receiving a diagnosis brought relief. It allowed her to understand what was happening to her body and establish a treatment plan to manage the disease. "The hardest thing dealing with that was not knowing what was going on. And it was every day, something new was wrong. And I'm just like, am I doing something to my body, am I not taking care of it like I should’ve?" Her openness inspires others battling similar challenges. Through her play time with the Athletes Unlimited (AU) league she gives back to organizations that bring awareness and support to those suffering from Crohn's and other inflammatory bowel disease. A Network of Support: Building a Career with a Strong Foundation Brown's journey wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the supportive network that has empowered her throughout her multifaceted career. She speaks with immense gratitude about the understanding she received from her team, the Los Angeles Sparks, and her podcast team during challenging periods related to her health and her leadership role in a new professional league for women's sports Athletes Unlimited. Brown's first return to professional play took place this past season with Athletes Unlimited, it is there she tested her strength to return to the court full time against fellow WNBA players. Brown also tested her front office skills, acting as chair of the Player Executive Committee for Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball. Brown is acutely aware that the opportunities that have come her way wouldn't have been possible without the people who believed in her. "And then these people like everyone was just like, very supportive and understanding of what I was dealing with and I couldn't have asked for a better organization," she says. Giving Back: Championing Empathy and Understanding Lexie Brown's compassion extends beyond the basketball court. She actively uses her platform to raise awareness about chronic illnesses like Crohn's disease. She emphasizes the importance of empathy and understanding, particularly for those who struggle with "invisible" conditions. "But just having like a little bit of education and just supporting them through their rough days. And then when they're having good days, just treat them how they normally are." Brown's advocacy efforts extend beyond social media. Brown’s insight on education and the importance of being present was beautifully said and helpful. A Role Model for the Next Generation Lexie Brown's story transcends the wins and losses on the basketball court. She is a down to earth role model who redefines what it means to be a successful athlete. Brown's journey is an inspiration to young girls everywhere, proving that they can excel in athletics while pursuing their passions beyond the court. Whether it's fashion, broadcasting, or social media, Brown demonstrates that success comes from embracing your individuality and using your platform to empower others. As Lexie Brown looks towards the future, her potential seems limitless. On the court, her dedication and talent promise an exciting career in the WNBA and the Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball. But Brown's ambitions extend far beyond the hardwood. Her success in sports media highlights her potential as a broadcaster.
