During New York Fashion Week, Naeem Khan debuted a collection that's an A-lister's dream. With this current awards show season in full swing, expect to see these gowns on the red carpet in no time.
This fashion month showed an increase in shows taking place in plain, industrial locations. This was no different. Located in an office building on Liberty Street, models walked the barren room in their contrastingly glamorous looks. Makeup artist, Joseph DiMaggio added to the glitziness with his use of golden cosmetic stickers striped across their eyes.
While not much is known about the show's backstory, the garments speak for themselves. The showstopping dresses and intricate patterns need no explanation.
The first look is a wearable red set complete with flowy trousers and a cropped tank top with ostrich feather details. It's almost deceptive. Viewers will expect similar looks to follow, which makes the following Hollywood-ready gowns more surprising and jaw-dropping.
A recurring motif appearing many garments are delicate, tasteful sequins. Sequins are a slippery slope; it's easy for them to come off as tacky. Khan brilliantly avoids this with careful, purposeful placement. Additionally, there are plenty of looks without them, so it doesn't feel overdone.
The most notable and impressive details are the fun patterns throughout the collection. Chevron, stripes, florals, checkered print, and even Jean-Paul Gaultier-esque polka dots. The more abstract prints seem to be inspired by traditional Indian garments, paying homage to Khan's heritage. The designs are incredibly youthful and diverse.
After designing looks for the likes of Michelle Obama and Beyoncé, expectations for the brand are sky high. The innovation and spectacle of Khan's designs easily exceed these expectations. Even after 21 years, Naeem Khan never fails to excite.
