- Puttin’ on the Ritz - Bronx and Banco Basks in Glitz & Glamour
By Erin Moonyeen Haley It could have been New Year’s Eve in Vegas with the way models strutted in Natalie De’banco’s shimmering line of gowns that were ice and fire with a side of velvet. Hosted in the jewel box setting of Nubeluz Rooftop at the Ritz Carlton New York, Nomad, stunning panoramic views provided the moneyed backdrop that perfectly dovetailed the clothing, all of which moved with the body with shimmies of sequins. The clothing line prides itself on being on the cutting edge of style, with “vibrant hues and slick tailoring” as its calling card, all of which was evident throughout the show. The collection's sobriquet was "La Boheme", a declaration of nonconformity where hedonistic pleasure is embraced, not shunned, and societal rules take a backseat to the libertine lifestyle that is less about gourmandizing and more about unabashed self-gratification. The woman who wears anything from the La Boheme line is not an individual who will cower in a corner of the dance floor; she will reign in the center, under the disco ball, embracing the spotlights. Making a Mad Max-esq wardrobe as sexy as Tina Turner ever did, gold crisscrossed the torso in a metallic ensemble, hanging in unfettered chainlinks down the legs. Accessorized with a gaucho hat, low-cut designs gave the impression that they were made of liquid licorice, save for the lacy leg. Silver hooks and sparkles swung in chandelier skirts while bodices encrusted with metal added extra bling. Metal butterflies and high, I-Dream-of-Jeannie ponytails made some looks appear glamorously girlie. Crystal and beaded headpieces with fringe harkened back to the 1920s sybaritic lifestyles. All that was missing was the champagne. Barely-there tops stamped the torso in neat addition signs, while fringe skirts kept things playful. Calypso herself would wear the gowns with sections cut from the torso, allowing sequined mermaid skirts to command all the attention. All gold corsets and shorts managed to be futuristic in a dominatrix way. Velvet stood out amid the metal and shine, especially with the peek-a-book cutouts. Stars in attendance included Russian Doll's Natasha Lyonne, Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell and Bravo'sThe Real Housewives of New Jersey's Melissa Gorga and Real Housewives of New York's Dorinda Medley and Luann de Lesseps. ~ Images provided by V
- Altuzarra Leaves The Desert For The Tundra With New NYFW ‘23 Line
Last time we saw Altuzarra, they transported us to the desert with their collection inspired by Don Juan and Desert Solitaire, pulling inspiration from Southeastern Utah. Altuzarra has now left the starry skies of Utah and traveled to the icy winds of the tundra. Their latest runway show, taking place in a dimly lit room with a simple walkway opened with a variety of pieces that showcased a fur trim. If there wasn’t a fur trim, there was an extravagant coat or scarf to define the fall and winter fashion. This new place we are traveling to, we are keeping warm. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WWD The brand still kept a native and tribal feeling, similar to last season, with the extensive use of patterns. The colors on these patterns were vivid, but they had earthy undertones tones, making them not overpoweringly bright. They looked like an old art piece that has still been able to maintain its beauty overtime. Complimenting these outer layers were silk and satin pieces or leather gloves. The color was equally vivid, but the smooth texture and look of the fabric complimented and balanced the patterns it was paired with. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WWD Each pattern was unique and different from the next, creating an anticipation of what was to walk down the runway next. From ombre, to faded stripes, to abstract patterns, each piece told a story and looked like it belonged with nature, an elevated earthy look. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WWD Patterns were eventually broken up with solid pieces that showcased a variety of fabrics, including knitwear and denser fabrics that give a fur-like effect. The denser fabric threads automatically stood out from the rest of the collection, but the models looked warm and cozy, ready to take whatever the winter brings them. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WW Leather also made an appearance, the shiny fabric following similar silhouettes to everything else. The fabric rarely used in such structured designs redefined what the incorporation of it could mean for fall fashion. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WWD The majority of these silhouettes were made possible by ribbed or draping fabrics that were tailored yet looked effortless. This decision helped create the theme of an effortless beauty that comes with nature and the world, no matter the season. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WWD During this section of the show, gemstone appliques and more intricate leafy patterns were introduced, giving a tribal look that complimented the beginning pieces, and their Spring 2023 line showcased in September. Photos credited to George Chinsee/WWD And like the seasons, what goes around, must come back around. The show ended with patterns through the use of leaves and gemstones, and brought back fur trim, emphasizing to the audience that a new landscape was ahead of them. - Coach’s Love-Worn American Dream at NYFW
By: Caitlin Thompson In stark contrast to their previous shows, Coach replaced their extravagant sets with two rows lining the long hallway. When speaking with Vogue Stuart Vevers said, “I want it to feel like we’ve invited you into our home; you’re much closer to the collection, much closer to the cast.” The walls were adorned with military portraits, dark wood, and stunning chandeliers to create Coach’s “home". Coach started the show with a knit dress with an ode to New York City. This distressed knit was paired with not one but two bags. Vever considers Coach to be "America's House of Leather". These beautiful double-breasted leather coats were each paired with their own bright bag. This year Coach could not have enough bags, some models even wore two. To continue Coach's love for leather there was a two-piece leather set with form-fitting shorts and a jacket both adorned with gold buttons. With even more leather is the ankle-length tench. However, in between these two leather looks is another distressed knit dress but this time with a Superman graphic. When speaking with Vogue Vever said, "I always think knit works really well next to leather." In the middle of the show, it appeared Coach had decided to take a brief denim intermission. The denim on denim is an exciting ode to the Y2K trend. When speaking with Vogue about using shearling in this collection, "Shearling has become a real reference point for Coach ready-to-wear." He also went on to say, "The idea of distressed and love-worn really comes through in these." These look really shined. The metallic jackets with shearling lined collar were paired with color coordinating bottoms. Each look accessorized with multiple bags from extra large totes to mini bags. This collection also featured a variety of gauze dresses in dusty colors. Each dress is paired with its own uniquely shaped bag. Vever also paired these looks with fun earrings in the shape of lollipops, doll shoes, and candy. Each look was completed with black leather combat boots. These coats are made from extra pieces of leather at Coach’s factories, making each coat unique. Vever wanted to focus on sustainability in the collection and when speaking to WWD he said in an interview with WWD Vevers said, “In recent seasons I’ve really been using the runway as a place to explore that whole world of sustainability. For me, that’s a focus that has been looking at waste, circularity, and new ways to create materials.” Each of these patchwork coats is made from extra pieces of leather at Coach’s factories, making each coat unique. Coach ended the show with more graphic destressed knits dresses and beautiful shearling. Like all of the other knit dresses these two featured stripes ad their own graphic. Each oversized shearling jackets were paired with color coordinating flare pants. Each pair seems to to have been splattered with white paint. All photos courtesy of Vogue
- Professionalism with a Pout ~ Tory Burch Proves that Subtle is Sexy at NYFW 2023
By Erin Moonyeen Haley Designer Yves Saint Laurent once said: "I love black because it affirms, designs, and styles. A woman in a black dress is a pencil stroke.” The models in Tory Burch’s ready-to-wear 2023 collection for New York Fashion Week took that adage and strutted with it. Whether in black or wearing color, the proverbial 'pencil strokes' made for clean lines that compelled the eye with gradations of urbanity and affirmations of power. The show had an operatic beginning that established the theme that nothing can obscure the classics. Lights were low and the curtain rose slowly, almost epically, above a stage outfitted with a grecian balustrade. The only thing missing was a pair of teenage star-crossed lovers. (The soundtrack maintained the romanticism, seemingly harkening back to Sarah Brightman's La Luna days.) Sometimes seen as the matriarch of a 'preppy American label', Burch turned the prep into the sophisticate with her collection. In past interviews with Grazia, she declared her intentions to use clothes to help women "feel empowered, sexy and romantic—also, I definitely think, unencumbered.” With that in mind, she delivered looks with coquettish fishnet stockings and androgynous button-up shirts, recognizing that the feminine comes in all flavors and forms. Burch excelled at her self-designed rubric, working with cotton, satins and silks to create sheath dresses and relaxed chinos; white coats with overlays of fur and peaches-and-cream corsets that gave just enough hint of Madonna's Vogue to remind us that, while her looks are dignified, they are in no way restrained. With slinky straps and a satin bodice, the flesh-toned and raven-black corsets had stirrings of a heroine in a Jean-Honoré Fragonard painting. The only thing missing was the garden and the swing. Amid the neutrals and the blacks, Burch gave her audience pops of color thanks to sour apple green satin dresses and pants. The 'little black dress' became something else entirely with an off-shoulder dress paired with siren-red heels look and a high neck number with knee-high boots. Houndstooth paired with fishnet stockings helped honor the complexities of femininity. Revlon red accented the base colors, keeping the passion alive. The simplicity trend continued, with resplendent fabrics hugging the body, but not in an overt form-fitting way, adhering to Burch's mantra of empowering women with looks that could be apropos for any venue or occasion. ~ Images courtesy of Vogue Runway

- Ulla Johnson Lives La Vie Bohème at NYFW 2023
By Erin Moonyeen Haley Nuances of the nomadic have always featured heavily in the underlying thesis of Ulla Johnson shows and fashion spreads. Palm trees, desert vistas, indigo blue seas and fulfillment of wanderlust have long been a motif in her fashion campaigns. And it’s no wonder. While Johnson was born and raised in Manhattan, her archeologist parents instilled within her an innate curiosity about the world and a hunger to explore beyond the cityscape. Now a designer, philanthropist and advocate for artisans in rural communities, Johnson’s Autumn/Winter 2023 ready-to-wear show during New York Fashion Week reiterated her itinerant philosophies and outlook. Her clothes also represent Johnson’s belief that women should be able to shop for comfort and chicness without feeling the need to constantly exorcise the demons of last year’s trends. With stars like Katie Holmes and Lily Allen in attendance and the city of New York offering panoramic views, (the Empire State building has several cameos in video footage), models strutted along a hand-woven carpet as opposed to a runway, wearing mismatched fabrics, satins and natural tones with periodic pops of sour apple green, raspberry and gold. The result was a look for the urban vagabond who is as comfortable with sand between the toes as they are with asphalt beneath the feet. Made from 100% silk, emerald dresses revealed plenty of shoulders, and the eye-catching skirts and peplums gave a flirty flounce with every step. Leather the color of cherries jubilee flambé cinched waists and was used to make loose harem pants, tight trench coats and calf-length skirts. Whether the shoes were mustard-yellow or sienna brown, the tassels added a moccasin element courtesy of leather fringe. Amid the caramels and the russets, gold accented ensembles with a Renaissance foil flourish. Mint greens splashed in seafoam chiffon waves while puffed shoulders made silhouettes all the more dramatic. Berries and merlot reds appeased a desire for regalness, especially when used with satin couture. Textures were varied, from faux furs to satins to cotton, making Johnson's love of textiles all the more apparent. Eyelet crochet work and cashmere sweaters popped alongside the patterns that called to mind faraway places. Color schemes remained earthbound, a constant reminder that these are clothes destined for a vagabond lifestyle. Images Courtesy of Vogue
