  • Meet Kelsi Davies

The Davies Factor Kelsi Davies has built a loyal fanbase as a multi-hyphenate content creator on YouTube and TikTok. The California-raised creative social media star celebrates a decorated resume across multiple creative outlets, making her mark as a musician, actress and psychic phenomenon due to her unique ability to sense and communicate with the other side. Photographer: Lindsey Ruth @lindsphoto Hair: Mika Fowler @mikahairstylist Makeup: Anton Khachaturian @antonmakeup Stylist: Alex Clough @alexclough.style You got your start as a dancer, discovered your psychic abilities and then started on YouTube, but what age would you say the music bug hit you? When I was about twelve, I just started singing and I thought I had a good sound. I never took lessons or anything, and I had a lot of people telling me “Oh, you’re not going to be a singer. So I stopped for a little while. Once I got into high school I just couldn’t stop singing, I was singing in the car, the garage, pretty much anywhere. I just really felt I had a calling for it. One thing we love about new artists is their journey of finding their unique sound and style, both sonically and visually. Can you describe your music sound? Do you want to experiment with genres as you’re growing your musical catalog? I haven’t found my sound yet. Right now, I’m focusing on just really expanding my range, and open to seeing where that takes me. I think I’ll find it eventually. But I’m still trying to figure that part out. I’m new to music, but it’s been so interesting to learn and to be able to work with different artists who introduce me to different styles. I’m just trying to see what really fits me. I think my new song September 10th is definitely a big step for me in finding my voice because it does show a lot more of my range than some of my other songs. Your visuals and videos are always so fun and captivating, September 10th in a way taps into the supernatural, which brings out your already widely known capability. So what was that process like when you got the video formula for that? Were you excited? Were you scared? I worked with Kyra Gardner on the video. She’s a good friend of mine who’s also into spooky stuff. Her dad Tony Gardner makes all the Chucky dolls for the films, and he’s the puppeteer, so he’s all into the horror aspect of things. She was really into my content, and I was really into hers. So we got together and we created the video. I had this vision in my head of what I wanted the video to be like, and we just kind of went off of that. Kyra put her own creative aspects into it along with mine, and then we had a visual effects artist that came in named Gabriel who just did a phenomenal job on all the visual effects you see in the video. She just made it all come together so intensely. It’s all about energy, that energy you feel that can be so dark. Demonic entities and things that people are scared of are just pure dark energy. I believe that when we are in that state of mind, we’re very vulnerable to spiritual attacks in that way. The video emphasizes that and it tries to show that it’s important to fight past the darkness to find your power, because in the end, we’re all so powerful. We don’t even realize how powerful we are as humans. Read the full interview in the Fall issue of Disrupshion Magazine Next Gen, releasing on October 25th. • Meet Kayden Muller-Jenseen

Her Incredible breakout Year Kayden Muller-Janssen’s face is recognizable because you know her from playing Hartley in the Disney series The Villains of Valley View. But these days Kayden is all about tapping into her love for music and sharing her voice with the world. Her debut single Kiss Kiss Baby landed a #1 spot on Radio Disney and was one of the top 5 most requested videos on Music Choice. The rising talent was also recently featured as one of People Magazine’s “2022 Talented Emerging Artists Making Their Mark.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY RUTH @LINDSPHOTO INTERVIEW BY ANGEL NEAL @ANGEL_STYLISTBEHAVIOR Things aren’t slowing down for Muller-Janssen as she’s determined to make this an incredible breakout year musically. In this interview we discuss her debut EP titled Unraveled, featuring five intimate tracks that put her talent on display. Most of us know you from being an actress on Disney. We’re blessed to live in a time where we can cater to all of our talents at once. Being a multi-hyphenate artist like yourself, would you say the music is most rewarding for you right now? I think so. For me music is the way to let out any kind of emotions I have, whether I’m happy or sad. I feel like right now, in the place that I am in my life, I’ve really grown, found my sound and know who I am as an actress, and a singer. I’m very proud of the music that I’m making and who I’m becoming as an artist, and I think that really translates to my fans. Hopefully with the next few singles that I have coming out as well they’ll really feel like they can relate to the music. One thing we love about new artists is their journey with finding their unique style, whether it be vocally or visually. How would you describe your music to someone unfamiliar with your sound? Well, I would say the typical genre people like to place my music in is Pop, Soul, and R&B. Once again, growing up in Florida and listening to all different types of music, I feel as though I get inspiration from everywhere. I don’t really like to put myself in one box or in one corner, if that makes sense. I always tell people, my music is very personal, it doesn’t fit in an exact genre. Sometimes it’s a pop song, sometimes it’s a rock song. Sometimes it’s a little bit of R&B and in each song you listen to there’s going to be a story that’s pretty personal to me, and hopefully the listener can relate. Every song is different, and I hope it touches people in different ways no matter what genre they prefer. I want listeners to feel like they’re experiencing the situation with me. The lyrics are a story that they can relate to because that’s where my songs come from, when I’m feeling most emotional, or in a really dark place. That’s where some of my best songs come from. Other people will have different opinions, but I’ll definitely say that my sound is very personal and relatable. Tell me a little bit about your latest single Meant To Be? I love this song. This was basically supposed to be my summer banger that I wanted all of my friends and family to listen to, yet it also has a really deep message behind it. Living out in LA for the past two years, it can get a little crazy out here. The people, the industry, it’s very fast-paced. If you’re not the type of person who can keep up with that, it can be really difficult. I found that for me, I was happiest traveling between LA and Florida. At that time, I went to the studio and realized this is exactly where I’m supposed to be in my life. I’m so beyond happy with my music career, with my acting career, going back home, seeing my family. I have a roof over my head, food on my table, and I’m literally doing my dream job. This is where I’m meant to be. That song basically wrote itself as well. We were in the studio for probably 10 to 20 minutes and the song was done. The song speaks for itself. It’s literally explaining exactly how I feel that this is where I’m meant to be. Sometimes it can be really hard getting wrapped up in all of the LA craziness, but I go back home to see my family and friends, I see the beach, the water and I just go this is where I’m meant to be recharging my battery. It allows me to collect myself. It means a lot that everybody loves the song too. Everybody is like this is my favorite song of yours. It’s a banger. • Meet TikTok Star Renata Valliulina

Yeah Baby She's Got It! Meet the Russian woman dubbed “prettiest girl on TikTok.” Renata Valliulina has earned a loyal fanbase of over 13 million followers and in her own words, she’s just getting started. Check out our exclusive interview with the stunning TkikTok star, content creator, stunt performer and model. Photographer: Yun Lynn @lynn_yati Words: Angel Neal What prompted your interest, and subsequently your foray into purchasing an American SIM card to start your TikTok journey? I had been wanting to move to the United States for a while. So I didn’t want to move without anything, I wanted to have something here. I decided that TikTok was a great platform to building up my brand in America. It was always my original plan to start one. On your channel, you cover things like lip synching, fashion, beauty, and travel. What’s your favorite content to produce? I like to film things I generally enjoy doing. Recently, I’ve been doing stunt training. I really like to train and I love to filming my sessions. If I’m traveling, I film something about traveling. So, it’s basically what I like to do in real life on a daily basis. That’s what I like to film. So speaking of that, what inspired you to start training in martial arts and stunt performance? Do you see yourself becoming an actress or pursuing stunt performance professionally? I think it’s a really amazing skill to have, and I wanted to have more strength. I didn’t know what exactly what I wanted to do, because I’m not a big fan of the gym. When I first moved to America, I had a lot of free time. I figured this was the perfect opportunity to learn something new, like building my upper body strength and pursuing martial arts. So I just chose martial arts instinctively. Did you always know what type of content you wanted to make? How did you find your vertical niche and the social media atmosphere? I don’t really think I have a niche. I just do a little bit of everything. Sometimes I post makeup videos, vlogs, training, or funny videos. My TikTok is just a mixture of everything. I never knew exactly what I wanted to film. I just wanted to be myself on my channel and thats it. So what’s one of your favorite videos that you created that you always like to just go back to? Oh, I have this one video I created that I genuinely love. It was a day in Russia when we went to a forest to film videos, but it was rainy all day. It was not pretty at all. We got really sad and didn’t know what to do. We didn’t film any videos and we just decided to go on a walk. At sunset, the rain was gone. We were in a lake and it looked so beautiful with the perfect pink sky, and the little bit of smoke on the lake. I was like, ‘I’m going to go into the lake. Let’s film some videos and photos. It's too pretty.’ All of the videos from this day are my favorite. They're so spontaneous, naturally filmed, and so pretty. The location was unbelievable. Your following is impressive across the board. So what do you feel has contributed to your overall success in social media? Why are people following you? I actually have no idea. I guess since I’m just filming my life and there's no fake effort in my content and, that’s what people can relate to. I guess that’s why I have a big following. I also know how to recognize patterns and what video is going to be popular and viral. It’s pretty easy for me. If I need to make a viral video, I can. I would say having the knowledge of social media patterns and being yourself is the main key to securing a big following. • Going Crazy Over Steph G

The name on Everyone's Playlist Right Now She's All That: Charming, skilled and beautiful, Steph G is a potential game-changer in a crowed playing field of rappers. In this interview we discuss her humble beginnings, where to get the best chop cheese, and how she plans on leaving her mark in Hip-Hop for the ladies. PHOTOGRAPHY BY @ANTHOSPHOTOS_ EDITED BY @SHOTBYCV STYLIST @DORIANJIHAD HAIR @TASHADOESMYHAIRBX MAKEUP @X0.CELEB INTERVIEW BY ANGEL NEAL @ANGEL_STYLISTBEHAVIOR PR @LAMARRARICE /@GLOBALPARTNERSPR So let’s start with the beginning. Growing up in Brownsville, was it inspiring to see the rich legacy of Hip-Hop in the borough? Who did you listen to growing up? Of course it was. I mean, you know, Brooklyn plays a big part in Hip-Hop. So growing up, I listened to a lot of 50 Cent and Lauryn Hill. Of course, I love Biggie, Tupac, Foxy Brown and Lil Kim. And then once Nicki Minaj came in the game, there's always a lot of Nicki on my playlist. So you got your start as a choreographer, then became a bartender at a strip club. Fast forward to the moment you find yourself in a recording studio. When did you decide you wanted to take music seriously? It was from the first day I got in the studio, believe it or not. I recorded my first verse. And you know, it was a little wack or whatever. But I felt like everybody in the room saw the vision, even though the music probably wasn’t where it was supposed to be at, because it was my first time. You know what, I want to go hard. I just felt like this is where I belonged, if that makes sense. So a lot of artists, when they start out, they don’t really know who they are. As an artist, it takes a little bit of time to find their sound. As an artist, are you comfortable with who you are right now in your creative process, or you’re like, it’s more levels to Steph G? To be honest, I’m never comfortable. But I do feel like I am authentic and I’m being myself. So I’m comfortable in that aspect. But there’s so much more to study, I have so much other stuff, other genres that I want to explore. I’m working on a lot of music right now that eventually the world’s gonna hear when the time is right. You’re currently independent, are you trying to find a musical home or taking your time? You know we have spoken to a couple of labels. I’m just waiting for the right situation. Honestly, I’m not in a rush to get signed. I have a really great team shout out to Smooth Sounds, they’re doing an amazing job. I feel if there’s not going to be a label that’s going to come and really put in the hard work that we’ve been putting in already it's not necessary right now. I just want a team that focuses on me right now. Everything has to be right, especially the publishing, there’s a lot of business aspects that, you know, just have to be in place for that to happen. These days an artistic team is just as important as the artists. The stylist, the publicist, glam team down to the security all play a key role. What would you tell upcoming artists that are still trying to find their people, their dream team? The best advice I could give is make sure you look at people’s character, because I feel like that’s a major part. I always end up going with the person that I feel is a good person. It’s not always about what they do, they also have to be a good person that will have the best intentions for my brand. Sometimes there will be people around you that's not in it for the money but they're putting in the work because they want to see you win. That’s somebody that you should want on your team, because they understand your vision and are willing to do the work. Everybody has to be on the same page. A lot of people think it's the top person that's going to get you where you want to go but sometimes that's not always the case. Pay attention to that one person that’s gonna put in 10 times more work than the top person and that really wants to see you win. The best advice I could ever give is find loyal people, that’s gonna rise to the top with you. So you’ve mentioned before Drake is a dream feature for you, why? Drake is a gifted musician, I love his music. I just love the way that he could literally jump on any beat or any style and make it go crazy. I’m really inspired by that. I feel like I look at myself as Drake. I could jump on anything and make it great. Like I said, I have a whole bunch of stuff I haven’t released yet, because I’m trusting God’s timing. I’m actually taking singing lessons because I do want to sing more on my tracks. I want to branch out a little bit more so I can monetize right now. In Brooklyn culture and imagery there’s an emergence for hardcore and drill rap, even from females. Do you see yourself shying away from that and kind of showing a softer side in your music? I jump on anything. But when I jump on drill, they start calling me a drill rapper and I’m like, I’m not a drill rapper. I don’t just drill. Drill rappers really have their own world. I’ll jump on trap or some melodic beats, pop and even Afro-beats if the opportunity presents itself. I’m versatile. The Source magazine named you one of the most powerful female artists bouncing on the Hip-Hop scene in 2022. What makes your sound different? I’m authentic. I feel like there’s nobody out here like me. I’m not really scared to say how I feel or in my songs. I don’t cap in my raps. I have good energy, I feel people just love that in general. I’m gaining a lot of fans and support from the industry because overall I’m a good person. I’m not one of those mean girls that come in the industry and feel like it can only be one female rapper dominating, no we all can eat. It’s not only the music, the music is a percentage of it. But at the end of the day, I’m a whole brand and I feel like my brand really helps the people want to fuck with me. • Palomo Spain is Reinventing Romance at NYFW

By Andi Manakdan The Plaza, a legendary hotel with interiors perfect for grounding a collection in divine elegance. Creative director Alejandro Gomez Palomo loves to lean into historical finesse. This season, his Spring Summer '24 show sent us to the heart of the Jazz Age. We sat in anticipation holding on tight to our chairs, because these looks were designed to swoon. "Cruising in the Rose Garden,” bloomed in an ascending fashion that mimicked the feeling of arousal. Our hearts began to race as we witnessed the collection unraveling. The color story was tender before it was bold. Palomo featured only whites and creams at first; before slowly adding pastel pinks and purples; followed by blues, blacks, and reds. The perfect palette to decorate a dizzying Summer romance. “For in the tapestry of human desire we find beauty in love’s clandestine attire,” said the brand. Palomo enchanted us with fabrics that draped like cake frosting. Rose shaped bags with long stems hanging like whips, sent chills down our spines. Exaggerated trains, angled cross-body details, and tiny-lace bottoms teased us with a seductive charm. A confident and cool vibe. Models were gliding down a beautiful, carpeted runway with a rose covered altar at the center. One by one they took long, controlled strides while interacting with audience members using playful eye contact and the silent language of close proximity. The collection highlighted both masculine and feminine. It featured feathered headpieces wrestling with biker jackets, ballet slippers waltzing with tall leather boots, and satin bows kissing knuckle rings. Palomo’s collection was delicate but daring in its decision to embrace desire. It was a romantic petition that each look signed with an angelic font. A campaign for an elevating kind of love that also has a curious element of danger. [Photos courtesy of Vogue Runway]

  • Tony Talks A New Type of Comedic Disruptor

What happens when your face goes viral? PHOTOGRAPHY / Paris Steward |Tall Tower Studios @mr_ceo.official INTERVIEW BY Angel Neal | Editor In Chief @angel_stylistbehavior Antonio "Tony Talks"Baldwin is one unique comedic influencer who has taken the internet by storm and has no plans on slowing down. He reminds us to live, love and laugh but don't forget to boldly walk into any room we enter, because he sure does. Because of his massive audience, Baldwin has had a vast myriad of partnerships with international brands such as Google, Crest, Airbnb, Universal Pictures, Snapchat, Citibank, Verizon Media, KFC, Scope, Comedy Central, LogoTV, iHeart Radio, Sprite and more! However, in spite of his massive success, "Tony Talks" remains dedicated to his passion: making people laugh. In this exclusive interview with Disrupshion Magazine, Tony talks inspiration, motivation and inspiring life through fun and laughter. What prompted your interests and subsequently your foray into comedic relief? Comedy, is medicine, I feel like laughing is medicine. Having a good laugh is the cure to a lot of things mentally and physically if you laugh hard enough. When dealing with personal experiences, certain episodes of anxiety, depression, all that stuff, I’ve found that laughing and just finding things funny helps you get out that funk. You’re very present when you’re laughing, and that’s why I sought to create a career out of it. Do you actually remember the first comedian or comedic show that resonated with you? Yeah. So Family Guy, Mad TV, Robot Chicken, I would say certain actors, Deborah Wilson, Jim Carrey and Martin Lawrence. These creatives, just sparked everything within me, so much curiosity of the power of laughter. How has your background, upbringing and education had an impact on your artistic career? Because I know, just being a black person in general, I think we’re naturally funny. What was it like for you? Well, I was more so which may suprise everyone, but the shy child growing up. I was just very shy. My mom swore I would grow up and become emo because I was just that quiet. But I was soaking it up. I was soaking in everything around me. I was, you know, just like every other shy child that was waiting for my moment. And when that moment happened, I just couldn’t shut up. So you know, I would say growing up in a house full of women, I have three sisters and as the only boy I wanted to be heard and seen. My dad traveled a lot for work. So I’m surrounded by all these women, and as you know women are Catty, women are back and forth. There’s so many stories within that alone that, you know, kind of just driven me to where I am today. So some social media content creators like to say that we should just judge jokes and comedians on whether they are funny. But comedians clearly bring their own experiences to comedy, and are often using their own stories to get certain kinds of laughs What do you think about this? I felt like relatable comedy is the best. And when it comes to me, I create things that are relatable, but I create, and I add an exaggeration to it. So I like the relatability. I love for the viewer to explore a reaction of why is this happening? I like a mix of both, I can be naturally funny but I can also naturally be relatable. But then the other part is like, what am I even watching, but I like it, so I’m gonna keep watching. Do you feel that people are very sensitive these days? Yeah, I do feel like comedy now is very borderline, but I feel like it is rightfully so. Because, you know, back then, I mean, I loved it. But still, I’ve noticed that comedy more so now is or what it was, is, you know, you you’re funny when you’re degrading someone or you’re funny when you’re, you know, making someone feel bad about themselves. Definitely, in our culture, that’s what we do. You know, we love to just jawn on people and all that stuff, which is fine, but at the same time, you know, people are very sensitive now, rightfully so. So, I choose to find a way to be funny, that isn’t degrading but still relatable. Your editing is unique in the structure of your videos. Did it take time to like find your groove? I remember, at a point in time, in the beginning, I wasn’t as organized, I will say. I met this guy who kind of told me I needed to work on my comedic timing. And then that’s when I was like, Okay, and I took it, and I ran with it, and I was like, Okay, let me figure out what I can do within a minute. So I want when viewers first hit play on my video, to see something that is like, Okay, what am I looking at? So while you are you trying to figure out why my wig is so tall? Or like, what I got going on? I already said a joke in the first three seconds. In in the midst of everything going on in my video, you realize he’s actually kind of funny. So let me keep watching. So that’s where my video structure comes into play. Our attention spans nowadays are so quick. So I figured give you something to look at that’s funny, and then let you hear something that’s fun, and you’ll keep coming back for a good laugh. Do you have a favorite character or person you like to portray in your videos? I don’t have a favorite at all. I just don’t want to get tied into any of it. So you know, my favorite character is me. So whenever I’m playing me, then I’m good. Can you describe your biggest challenge so far, and how have you overcome it? Yes, my biggest challenge, I would say is comparison. When you’re an influencer you know your friends are your coworkers. It’s just like any other field, you end up just comparing yourself to the people around you. I wouldn’t say I have overcame the challenge of comparison, its a process. I’m still overcoming it and what helps is I limit what I show myself. So I limit what I see on social media, I literally have two accounts I utilize. One of them is solely just motivational things. And then when I want to get into the mess, because I am human, then I, you know, go on the other page and look at a few things. But other than that, I separate intentionally whats put in front of me and try to cater to positive things that will help me be the best version of myself. In an industry with so much competition? How do you stay uplifted, motivated, and even inspired to push through and maintain your happiness, while also cultivating these necessary relationships? So I would say, kind of like what I was saying before, I would try to, filter what I see, that keeps the happiness going, you know, it keeps the authentic newness. I want to make sure I’m looking at the right things. And as for the relationships, let me tell you, in the beginning of all this, I would make pretty much anybody I met my best friend, you know, I would, I’m a social person. So I’m an introverted introvert. So I love to speak to people, I love to have fun and all that good stuff. But then I had to learn the difference between, like I said earlier, coworkers and friendships and within this industry, to keep the balance of those relationships. That’s what I had to do. I had to realize, okay, they’re not gonna really talk to you after today. So you need to make sure you do what you got to do present yourself, all that good stuff. And if they talk to you, it’s mainly for opportunities. So you need to make sure that you keep them at a distance and stuff like that. So understanding that is what helped me maintain these relationships. I like to talk so I can easily get into a room and connect with anybody. I stay uplifited by just knowing whats for me is for me. You’ve been able to land some great partnerships and collaborations, how has that journey been so far? It’s been awesome. I would just say, through me being authentically myself, and like, just kind of just doing what I want to do, and not paying attention to all this craziness, it has, brought these brands and these partnerships and these people to me, and it makes me stand out. It’s been awesome. But there’s ups and downs of every journey. And I can definitely say, you know, with this journey, it has been complicated, but it’s been the most rewarding. So you know, I’m grateful for every bit of it. For many to get to where they want to be, they have to be comfortable in the now of who they are. For you is self love, a practice, a destination or something else in its entirety? It’s always a practice for me and I feel its a practice for every one! If anybody ever tells you or anybody reading this that they’ve just always been confident that is just not true. They are not human, and they’re not from earth, if they just came out, just loving themselves. And I just feel like every single day, it’s a practice. Everyday when I walk outside, when I create a video, when I do this interview it’s a practice, and I’m grateful for you know, daily for being able to work towards something. I’m completely grateful for it. You ain’t human if you ain’t working towards something. So where do you draw your inspiration from for your content, creation? It comes from life experiences. I tell everybody that because it truly does. It comes from me having just normal conversations, me talking to you and the inconveniences that you’re having, could trigger an idea for a video. What I’m saying is just live and learn and the ideas will come. I always tell people who go through like creative ruts or anything like that. It just means you’re not experiencing life enough. And you know, you have to take breaks, go on a vacation. If you can’t do that, go outside, speak to somebody. And you know, it’ll just start flowing to you. So life experiences is what drives every video. I’ve either experienced everything, or I’ve spoken to someone who’s experienced it and I’ve exaggerated it in my video. So that’s usually how that with their permission of course, but that’s how that all works. What is your monthly wig budget? You switch it up often. People think I’m out here spending 1000’s or whatever dollars, and I’m not literally. I go to the beauty supply store, it’s a guy that works there he knows me by name now, and he just helps me out. And I will say, about $150 a month. But honestly I could wear a mop on my head, and I will find a way to make it look nice. So you know, it’s not about the perfection of anything is literally just about what stands out to me. And you know, that’s it. I would be crazy to be walking around with a $600 wig on my head for a video, unless its sponsored and i didn’t pay for it. I’m very cheap. And it’s actually more funny when it’s the basic wigs that are more relatable, people love that aspect of the content. You’ve been granted the ability to send a message to your 16- year-old self. What do you say? A question like this honestly always makes me cry, just because I’m always with my younger self. Like, that’s my motivation to keep doing anything that I do. And my 16 year old self, I was going through some things like a lot of things. But I would say to myself that everything I’m going through it will all be worth something in the future and there’s a reason for everything. There’s a reason for the tears. It’s a reason for the awkwardness, the uncomfortableness, the anxiety, because all of those things, although at that time, I used to pray it away and all that craziness, all of those things created something special that I’m living in today. And I wouldn’t change one of those sad dramatic depressive moments. Tony talks thoughts on influence on using his influence. I hate the word influencer because I don’t want to be the guy who is in charge of making anyone do anything. But I would like to just share the message to other people just to authentically be themselves and figure out what that means for them. Tony Talks thoughts on prayer. I’m big on prayer. If you want a happy life, I feel a prayer is the way to go. And you don’t have to pray like anybody else. You don’t have to sit there and you know, say all these big words and all that stuff. Praying is very casual in my book, you know speaking to God like he’s your friend or whoever you speak to when you’re comfortable. I feel you always need something higher than yourself to look up to. So prayer is a must for me. Tony Talks on learning to listen to my intuition. Okay, so everyday I’m learning to listen to my intuition, trying to understand it better. I’m far from perfect. I mean, in a perfect world, that’s exactly what you need to do trust your gut. But you know, your mind steps in and is like, hold on, let’s think this through and all that good stuff. But all the best experiences in my life has come from trusting myself. So I’m all for it. Tony Talks on success, like what does success look like in your eyes? Because it’s different for different people. Success for me is being able to sit in a chair and sit there and just be joyful and not feel like you have to do anything else. To feel like theres nothing you’re missing out on just sitting down and you’re like, I’m real happy right here. That’s, that’s what success is to me, peace. Tony Talks on something we all know but bears repeating. Everyone knows what they have to do to achieve any goal. If you want to lose weight, you know how to do it. If you want to gain weight, you know how to do it. If you want to be a singer, you know what you have to do. We know whats expected of us but for some reason we sometimes need a mental push to just start. I’m still learning the things that I already know if that makes any sense. Tony Talks on words to live by, what keeps you going in the morning or whatever? What keeps me going is I belong in any room, I step in, and so do you. If you don’t feel like you belong in there, then it’s either you switch to another room or you make that room yours. So you know, that’s, my thing. And I’m still learning it like, there are rooms that I walk into, and I’d be like, Hold on now, but you just have to know you belong in every room that you that you step foot in and also understand that doesn’t put you above anybody. It just helps to understand your worth, you know what I’m saying. I’m always thinking, I was invited and even if I wasn’t, God didn’t put me in for no reason. • Music Matters: Soulful Sounds, Meet Keeyen Martin

A refreshing voice and a personality to match, rising vocalist and performer Keeyen Martin, is just getting starter. The relentless North Carolina native, is definitely one to watch and add to your playlist. His performance track record is even more impressive. Having performed at The Grammys, BET Music Matters, Essence Festival, Billboard Atlanta plus many more!Disrupshion got a chance to speak to the emerging indie artist and get to know the man behind the sound. Interview by Angel Neal So coming from North Carolina and as you say, a musical family tree, how has that influenced your personal style and sound in music? Well, definitely, I would say North Carolina has a big church scene. And Growing up in church, I just remember being inspired by big choirs and singing soloists. I would be exposed to a lot of bands and R&B performers. I was introduced to a fair variety of just really amazing experts in their craft. I remember in school, I learned that, K-Ci and JoJo, Fantasia and Anthony Hamilton were all from the Carolinas. These talents have become hometown heroes that are killing it. Knowing they could do it, gave me confidence and encouragement, as a performer to kind of follow in the trail that they were already blazing. So what was it like touring in Europe. Is there like a big fan base for R&B out there? Yes, Euoropeans love our music, TV , style just our culture in general. I loved touring out there, it was really cool in a very real way of how they celebrated black musicians. It’s fascinating to do performances where they knew the music, they would sing along with you, even though it was oftentimes a language barrier. I spent a lot of time in Italy, and the Italians knew the lyrics to my songs, that was a very special feeling, you know, to experience that in real time. You sing , write and play the piano. Your music feels very inspiring and raw, it’s kind of a natural blend of melodic Pop. Is that an intentional projection that you put on your music? I would say so. I just try to be authentic as possible through my music. I just really use everything that I’ve experienced in put it into the music. I remember growing up my mom would always just play a variety of music in the house and in the car. I would always find a way to say, the things that I like and add my personal style in my writing. So I think naturally for me, I just wanted to make feel good music and I didn’t want it to be limited to, you know, a specific genre style. I wanted to have fun combining them and telling great stories through songs. You’ve gotten a chance to share a stage with powerhouses like Stevie Wonder Aretha Franklin, Kanye West and Ce Ce Winans, what moment so far has felt surreal for you? For me, it was definitely the Grammy’s. I think just being in Los Angeles, walking the red carpet and actually being around people I’ve admired for so long. I remember growing up watching 106, and Park and MTV music videos and just seeing the life and journey of artists and people in entertainment. And so to be in this space, seeing so many people I’ve seen on TV, in interviews, their music videos, that was very surreal and it was empowering. I’m just thankful to have made it this far and I want to continue to grow. those different entities that don't collide and I'm able to pursue my passions all at once. "The word NEUTRAL is a synonym for relaxing or yielding to the person you are meant to be. It’s perfectly okay to be who you are, the world awaits our authenticity, and being yourself will lead you to living your wildest dreams.” What inspired your anticipated EP release Neutral? How did you come up with that title? It was during the pandemic when I decided I wanted to finally release my first EP that consisted of original music. I wanted the process of it to be highlighted, and what I mean by that is I wanted to tell my story from start to where I am presently. And so that culminated you know, being a church kid, growing up in Charlotte, loving all types of music styles and genres. I just simply wanted the full EP to represent every personal experience I’ve had and from the start of it. So even with the intro its a Gospel Church with a choir and a background, because that was my beginning. And then it takes you on a journey song by song theres R&B vibes, happy vibes, chill vibes and heartbreak. I just want Neutral to represent every part of what I’ve been through thus far. What do you hope listeners take away from the project? Ultimately, that if you tell your story, and tell it from a authentic place you really can connect with people, and that was my goal with the music. I didn’t want to write or sing from a space that was unreal to me. And by doing what’s from the heart, it reaches the heart. Spirit can read the spirit energy reaches energy. I hope that when people listen, they recognize that, you know, just focus on your experience and living that in its truth from the most sincerest space. And you really will surprise yourself of how it connects with people and how it inspires people. So in a field with so much competition, how do you stay uplifted and even motivated to push through yet still cultivate necessary relationships? For me, it is it is simply knowing that it’s a purpose far more than even myself at times, like I think that was very pivotal, when I would have low moments, where I recognized, okay, I’m not just doing music, because I like to do it. I’m doing it because I genuinely know it’s what I’m called to do, I’m chosen to do. And when you recognize that purpose is larger than you, it helps you keep going. Like for me, I do a lot of teaching with a lot of youth in the arts and teach them voice and piano and I teach songwriting all those things. I recognize even on my lowest days, there’s a student that I will have a lesson with, and they will share. You know, the way that you explain this, to me, it really impacted me, it changed my life. It made me want to study and work a little harder. That becomes a whole degree of fulfillment, that for me, it supersedes even somebody saying, Oh, hey, I like this song, or I liked the videos, wow, I’m actually putting a seed into a younger person’s life, where they’re encouraged and inspired to keep going. And, and I think that, especially even in music, but even in a bigger picture, I think, specifically for us as black people, when we see how our careers can change our lives, change our community, change our family, we start to recognize, hey, I’m suppose to do this beyond just Oh, I like to do this. Oh, it’s cool to do this. It’s like no, there, I have a gift that is reaching people, and it’s changing people’s lives. So if I keep doing that, I’m now inspiring them to do the same thing and they’re reaching another person. Dream Collaboration? Missy Elliott or Stevie Wonder. R&B Mount Rushmore? Jazmine Sullivan, New Edition Aretha Franklin Mary J. Blige John Legend Describe your musical sound? My music is a blend of pop, R&B, and soul. So today, we look at streams, social media, and sometimes don't really focus on the beauty and music. What defines an artist to you in 2023? I think what defines an artist is the core content of whatever it is they're doing. And I mean, very similar to what you said, I feel like, from your lyrics to your approach to it, people are going to walk away with a depiction or an impression of who you are and what you're about. And I feel like I like to think of it as when we think of legends like you think of like a Missy Elliott, a Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, or Beyonce. People are automatically connecting with people like that, like they have longevity. They have messages that apply to so many different things we've been through in life. And they're musical and creative geniuses, right? And we feel that simply by listening to a song like I know for me, Missy Elliott is one of my absolute favorite artists. And I just think about every song that I hear from her. It's like, how did you even conceptualize this type of feeling on a record? And then, you know, coupled with her music videos, you're like, how do you see this in your head and bring it to life? And for me, it's genius. It's actually the master of our craft. And I feel like that's what people take away when they listen to an artist. So that's why it's important. Your subject matter. Your approach to music, that's what connects with people, you know what I'm saying? And I feel like when when you don't really allow yourself to be true in that process, or or, or let your creativity shine. That's how people are okay, well, this sounds like something else I've heard or I'm not really feeling this record, and I feel like every artist is capable of doing it, but every artist doesn't necessarily have the same amount of I would say desire Are two, okay? Let me sit with myself and really, really, really, really fortify my talent or fortify my approach. Sometimes, you know, people just prefer a simple, easy way. And we can hear that. So arguably, there has never been a better time for independent artists right now. Do you agree with that, with the new wave of social media, people being able to pop off without being signed? Definitely. I feel like that, that is a special thing about social media, that so many people in a way kind of have an equal opportunity to draw awareness to what they're doing. And I think it's, it's so cool, but it's so necessary to music and culture. Because a lot of times, I think, what's frustrating, it seems like there's a narrow way to get your music out to the masses, you know, because you're like, Oh, my goodness, I don't have this big record contract. Or, if I don't have access to big radio play, I'm not going to be able to do anything. But now that's really changed, where you can really build your own platform, you can build your own fan base, your own audience. And by way of you utilizing social media, we can regularly get people to traffic, what you're doing. So social media has definitely been I think, very pivotal in helping people. So what should we really know about you? What sets you apart from others? I refuse to stop. I'm one of the most consistent people I know. And I like to live by praise, if you can be consistent, you can be great. I'm an artistic guy that loves people, I love making music. But also I love encouraging people because I encouraged myself, I think that it's important to wake up every day and say, Yeah, I want to be the greatest version of myself. So through music, I try to inspire people, by telling stories that they can relate to the good, the bad, the in between, but ultimately, through it all, like, we're gonna get through this together and you can definitely become the better version of yourself. By the way you remind us of a R&B Andree 3000, have you ever heard that? I love that and I'm gonna shout you out every time for saying it.. Like, that's perfect. Because for me, I think you know, Andre 3000 and OutKast in general are iconic. I would say, even I love the style of realm, artsy, grown man and 60's inspired eclectic thing all jumbled together. But I remember learning about Andre 3000, he is so fire from not just his rap skills and his writing but his image and and I think he was one of the earliest artists that as a black guy, you kind of see him unafraid to just want to be different. What are you most excited for next? For me, it's touring. I know that we're in talks with a lot of different cool situations. And hopefully, one of them will manifest in the near future. I'm looking forward to sharing Neutral' and sharing a lot of new music on the stage. That's one of my my biggest loves is being on stage performing, you know. And so I would definitely say touring and the other big thing is collaborations, there are a lot of different artists and rising artists and new artists and big name artists that I just have my eye on that I want to collaborate with. So yeah, those two things.
