- From Finding Her Voice to the Red Carpet: Michelle Nunez, A Star on the Rise
Michelle Nuñez is a multifaceted actress, artist, and mental health advocate. As an Afro-Dominican American, her diverse background, coupled with her exposure to various cultures, has enriched her artistic perspective and influenced her career in the entertainment industry. Maintaining an active lifestyle and practicing mindfulness and meditation contribute to personal and work-life balance. A woman of faith, love, and enjoyment of expression, Michelle has emerged into the industry and captivated her audience. Photographer : Storm Santos Words Antoinette Ford Stepping onto the red carpet at the NAACP Image Awards is always a significant moment, but for this rising star, it was also a moment of pivotal transformation. When asked about how her breathtaking red carpet look came together, she shared how she initially resisted wearing a dress. "I had a little bit in mind," she admits when asked about her stunning look for the event. "I'm not a big dress person—I usually lean toward suits or chic pants and a nice top. But my stylist, Tabitha Sanchez, had other ideas." The search for the perfect dress was a whirlwind. "I remembered seeing Zendaya in a yellow dress at an event and told my stylist, 'Let's try a yellow dress.' " After a few hiccups—including one that was five sizes too big—the fashion gods delivered. "Tabitha, my stylist, pulled out this stunning Vivienne Westwood dress. We tried it on, and it fit perfectly—like it was meant to be." With just a few alterations, the look was complete, and she walked the carpet in a gown that was both comfortable and elegant. As a proud Dominican American, she was deeply moved by Zoe Saldana’s historic Oscar win. "My mom texted me, freaking out! It was such a powerful moment, not just for Zoe but for our entire community. She’s paved the way for so many of us. Someone told me recently, ‘Some women run so that we can walk,’ and that’s exactly what Zoe has done." Photographer : Storm Santos While Hollywood is making strides in diversity, she acknowledged that there is still work to be done. "This was such a powerful moment—not just for her but for all of us who are coming up in the industry."Born into a military family, she moved frequently, living in places as diverse as Germany, Texas, and New York City. "It was tough leaving friends behind, but it made me great at making new ones. The flip side? I struggled with keeping friends and finding that sense of rootedness." Now, living in Los Angeles, she sees how those experiences shaped her. "I learned to embrace different cultures and appreciate every individual’s journey. That’s why I’m so vocal about human rights—because at the end of the day, we’re all just people trying to find our way." Beyond acting, her artistic passions span storytelling, music, and activism. "True artists often struggle with existentialism—think Van Gogh, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse. There’s a deep understanding that life is both beautiful and excruciating. That duality fuels my art." As she embarks on a music career, she’s learning to embrace her voice in a new way. "This past summer, I was scared to even sing in front of my boyfriend. Now, I have four recorded songs and a growing confidence in sharing my art." " Photographer : Storm Santos It’s about vulnerability, about standing tall with no shame." Fans of Ruthless have seen her character evolve from a woman ruled by fear to one who commands power. "In Season 1, she was hesitant, trying to find the good in a dark place. But by Season 3, after being forced to take a life to prove loyalty, she realized the only way to survive was to play the game. Now, she’s fearless." Does that journey reflect real life? Absolutely. "Finding your voice is universal—whether it’s escaping a toxic situation or stepping into your power. It’s about embracing your truth."The Ruthless cast is more than just co-stars. "We’re family. Melissa, who plays Ruth, is grounding. Matt, who plays The Highest, has this incredible ability to balance villainy with vulnerability. That’s what makes his portrayal so compelling."Working under Tyler Perry’s high-pressure, fast-paced production style has sharpened her craft. "We often get one take, maybe two. You have to show up prepared and trust your instincts. It’s intense but incredibly rewarding." Photograph : Storm Santos With Ruthless continuing to captivate audiences and a music career on the horizon, she’s stepping into her power like never before. "I’m making my own lane, my own table. And if that inspires others to do the same, then I’ve done something right." One thing’s for sure—this star is just getting started. - Empowering Women and Redefining Beauty: The Story of Marvella Akiojano
Marvella Akiojano’s rise from a teenager experimenting with her mother’s makeup to one of the most influential voices in beauty and fashion is a story of resilience, authenticity, and unwavering dedication. Today, with a thriving presence on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, Marvella has not only built a loyal following but also launched her own cosmetics brand, Marviano Cosmetics. In this interview, she opens up about her journey, the lessons she’s learned, and how she continues to stay true to herself while navigating the world of influencer culture and entrepreneurship. Photographer Tolulope Gangbo Words by Angel Neal Marvella’s fascination with beauty began long before the world knew her name. “Honestly, I started off just planning my mom’s makeup,” she recalls with a smile. “As a kid back in Nigeria, when you’re doing that and wearing makeup at such a young age, people side-eye your parents. But my parents let me express myself with beauty and fashion, and they traveled a lot with me. London, especially, opened my eyes to the global world of fashion, beyond Lagos.” Her early exposure to different cultures fueled her creative energy, eventually leading her to explore platforms like Vine and Musically, where she initially started by making lip-sync videos. But the real turning point came when Musically evolved into TikTok. "That’s when I started doing makeup tutorials,” she says. “I began on YouTube, doing wig videos, makeup looks – and that’s how the evolution of 'Marvella' began." What started as a journey of sharing lip syncs, dancing, and beauty tutorials quickly transformed into a full-fledged career. "I started as a dancer, then I moved to wig videos on YouTube, followed by makeup tutorials. Now, I do it all,” she explains. "I just kept experimenting, trying new things, and seeing what resonated with my audience.” Building a brand isn’t without its challenges, and Marvella has faced her fair share of obstacles. "I remember being stuck at 50k followers for the longest time," she confesses. “It would go down to 48k, then 49k, then back to 50k. It was frustrating. At one point, I wanted to delete my Instagram account because it wasn’t growing.” Instead of giving up, she doubled down on consistency. “I made a promise to myself – I would post every single day for an entire year. I figured, if I gave it everything I had, it might change the algorithm, and it worked.” She encourages others to push through those moments of doubt, saying, “Give yourself one more chance, even when you feel like giving up. Your breakthrough might be right around the corner.” In the world of influencer marketing, staying authentic is key. But how does Marvella maintain her connection with her audience while working with brands? “I’m very selective about the brands I work with. I don’t promote products that don’t fit my values or that don’t work for me,” she says firmly. “I’ve turned down collaborations because a product didn’t align with what I stand for. Integrity is important, and not all money is good money.” She continues, “It’s also about filming when I feel my best. When I’m in front of the camera, I want to be excited to share what I’m creating. It’s about being genuine and letting that energy come through.” Marvella’s content is a mix of beauty tips, travel stories, and personal moments. When asked how she balances sharing personal experiences while maintaining a professional brand, she answers, “I believe everything is content. I’ll record whatever I’m doing, even if it’s just a casual moment. I’m always thinking about how I can turn a moment into something relatable for my audience.” She adds, “I don’t have to balance the content I share. I just live my life, and my audience follows along. If they see me having fun or trying something new, they’re part of that journey with me.” The beauty industry was always in Marvella’s heart, but creating her own line, Marviano Cosmetics, has been a game-changer. Her recent lip liner and gloss collection, especially the Brick Mocha shade, has been a huge hit, selling out in just one week. “The key to our success is solving a problem,” she explains. “Brick Mocha is our darkest brown shade, and I’ve always struggled with lip liners that don’t last all night. I noticed it wasn’t just me – my friends were constantly reapplying their lip liner throughout the night. So, I went into research mode, and Marviano was born.” She goes on, “It’s been surreal to see people embracing Marviano. I’m not crazy – people actually care about these problems I’m solving. It’s not just a product; it’s a solution.” With her background in marketing, Marvella is determined to make Marviano Cosmetics stand out in a competitive industry. “I didn’t want to skyrocket the prices. I focused on quality rather than just aesthetics,” she says. “That’s the beauty of having a marketing degree – I can blend traditional marketing methods with what I know works on social media.” And despite her rapid growth, she remains humble and committed to her values. “I want to show my African sisters that greatness is possible for us too. We don’t have to fit into a box. You can be financially free and successful, no matter where you come from.” For those looking to break into the beauty or fashion space, Marvella’s advice is clear: “Stay true to yourself. You don’t have to fit the mold. Consistency is key, and don’t be afraid to bet on yourself. Trust that God has given you the talents you need to succeed.” Reflecting on her own journey, she says, “Five or six years ago, I posted a YouTube video where I had $20 in my backpack, dreaming of working with big brands. Look at me now – working with them. You can do it, too.” The future for Marviano Cosmetics is bright. Marvella is already looking to expand her product line with new lip glosses and perhaps even venture into fashion. “I would love to collaborate with a fashion brand on a collection,” she shares. “I originally wanted Marviano to be a handbag brand, but I knew my audience wasn’t ready for that. So, we’re sticking with makeup for now, but you never know what the future holds.” As for her personal goals, she’s already thinking about giving back to her community. “I hope to host a brand trip for my Marviano dolls,” she says. “It’s all about uplifting and inspiring the next generation of content creators.” “I want to use my influence to uplift women all around the world,” she says, “to show them that they can be themselves and get paid for it.” Her mission is clear – to inspire others to chase their dreams and to never stop believing in their own potential. In the end, Marvella Akiojano is more than just an influencer or a beauty mogul; she’s a role model, showing the world that with hard work, authenticity, and a little faith, anything is possible. - From Medicine to Makeup: Lisa Joy, the Beauty Disruptor Empowering a New Generation
Lisa Joy's journey is one of determination, self-discovery, and breaking away from traditional expectations to create a unique space in the beauty industry. Born and raised in Nairobi, Lisa’s path took a significant turn when she moved to Greensboro, where her story took root in both education and beauty. Photography By Ssam Kim Words By Angel Neal Having grown up in a traditional African household where education was paramount, Lisa was initially focused on pursuing a career in medicine. "Education was really the only thing that we could really get into to order for us to have success within the future," she shares. Despite enjoying biology and learning about the human body, it wasn’t a true passion for her. "I wasn’t really content with what I was doing. I don’t think this is something I want to do for the rest of my life," she admits. After graduating with a degree in biology, Lisa found herself at a crossroads, searching for something that would ignite her passion. During her time in college, she started a YouTube channel as a hobby, sharing her love for makeup and beauty. "I enjoyed makeup, I enjoyed beauty, and I decided to open my channel just to kind of share that experience with people," Lisa recalls. At first, it was a casual outlet, but when COVID slowed everything down, she decided to take the plunge and focus more seriously on content creation. As she balanced applying to medical schools, Lisa began noticing a shift in her content. "People actually want to learn. They want to have fun with it, but they don’t always know how to use makeup," she says. This realization pushed her to focus on education and helping others feel confident in their beauty routines. "I just loved doing it. I enjoyed reviewing products, teaching people how to apply makeup, and educating them on what works for different skin types," she explains. Lisa's unique approach, combining product reviews with educational tutorials, has helped her build a loyal following. But how does she maintain consistent engagement? "It's all about listening to your audience and understanding what they want," she says. "Once I started focusing on education, I saw people really taking that in a positive way." As beauty trends evolve at a rapid pace, Lisa stays ahead of the curve by constantly scrolling through platforms like TikTok, seeking inspiration from the latest trends and feedback from her followers. "Sometimes it's just the videos that people request or comment on that spark my next idea," she says, adding that audience requests are often her biggest source of inspiration. For someone like me, who’s a bit makeup challenged, I asked Lisa for advice on common makeup mistakes. "Understanding your skin type, face shape, and unique features is key," she advises. "Learning the basics and knowing what works for you is really important." With a growing platform and notable collaborations with beauty giants like Rare Beauty, Gucci Beauty, and CeraVe, Lisa’s career continues to soar. When asked about her favorite partnerships, she emphasizes inclusivity. "I really enjoy working with brands that cater to diverse skin tones and types," she says. "Brands that are inclusive, offering a wide range of products, are the ones I connect with the most." As an influencer with a large and diverse following, Lisa's focus isn't solely on beauty but on empowerment. "I want to inspire people, especially girls and boys in the beauty world, to be themselves," she shares. "You don’t have to know everything about makeup to enjoy it or feel good about yourself." Looking to the future, Lisa has plans to launch a beauty supplement brand in 2025, further expanding her influence in the wellness space. While she couldn't share much yet, her goal remains clear: to continue inspiring and uplifting her audience. "My biggest goal is to inspire others and help them feel comfortable in their skin," she says. In an industry that often emphasizes trends and competition, Lisa remains grounded by focusing on her purpose. "When you’re doing something you truly love, it doesn’t feel like pressure," she shares. She also credits her husband Kevin, who plays a crucial role behind the scenes, for keeping her motivated and grounded. "He helps me stay focused and keeps me motivated, both mentally and physically," she says, smiling. When reflecting on her own growth, Lisa offers advice to those starting their own journeys in content creation. "Don’t focus on going viral. Build a community, and stay focused on your long-term goals," she advises. "The success comes when you have a true passion for what you're doing." Through the ups and downs of the beauty industry, Lisa continues to stay motivated. "My audience is my biggest motivation," she says, noting that seeing her impact on others keeps her going even through slower months. As for what we can all learn from her journey, Lisa’s wisdom rings clear: "Never limit yourself, because you just never know how far you can go." Lisa Joy’s story is one of resilience, passion, and the unwavering belief that doing what you love can lead to incredible success. Whether it's makeup, wellness, or empowering others, her influence continues to make a meaningful impact on the beauty world. To keep up with all things Lisa Joy follow her here @ alejayofficial .
- Elena Sanchez: From The Hunger Games to Captain America – A Journey of Stunts, Transformation, and Passion
Elena Sanchez, the Spanish-German actress, has gracefully navigated her career through a myriad of roles in both indie films and major Hollywood productions. From her breakout in The Hunger Games to her latest work in Captain America: Brave New World and Bone Face , Sanchez has become a recognized face in both acting and stunt performing. In a candid interview, she shares her journey from childhood performer to major star, offering insight into what makes her such a versatile and compelling presence in cinema today. Photography Ben Cope Words Angel Neal Sanchez’s career began in a way she never expected. "Growing up, I wanted to be a vet," she admits with a laugh. "Then I realized I loved animals too much to see them hurt and sick. I thought I wanted to manage hotels, but nothing clicked." It was while pursuing a degree in hotel management that she discovered her true calling. "I took an acting class as an elective, and I just fell in love with it. I thought, if I could be as excited to go to work every day as I am to go to this class, then I’ve found the right thing for me." Despite having no connections to the industry, Sanchez's passion for acting grew, and soon she was determined to make it her career. "I had no one in my family or circle who knew anything about the business, but I was going to figure it out." She found her breakthrough after transitioning from theater and gymnastics into stunt work, which became a cornerstone of her career. Reflecting on her formative experiences in theater and gymnastics, Sanchez emphasizes the importance of performing in front of an audience. "I think the stuff I did as a kid got me used to performing in front of people," she explains. "Gymnastics is all about precision and performance, and that really helped me transition into film and TV." Her background in gymnastics naturally led her to stunt work, as Sanchez learned to control her body and execute complex moves with ease. However, her journey into stunts wasn’t a conventional one. "Casting directors don’t really deal with stunts directly," Sanchez shares. "It’s the stunt coordinators who hire stunt performers." But her gymnastics skills led to her first stunt job – a commercial for a cell phone. "I didn’t even realize I was doing stunts at the time, but when I got home, I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I just did stunts!'"One of Sanchez's latest roles is Deputy McCully in the thrilling murder mystery Bone Face , where she plays a character embroiled in a tense, high-stakes investigation. "The big thing for me was that I had never done a murder mystery before," Sanchez reveals. "I love Knives Out , and I wanted to do something like that." She was drawn to McCully’s complexity as a character who is both tough and vulnerable. "You have to strike a balance. As a police officer, I have training to separate my emotions from the job. But at the same time, I didn’t want to make McCully so tough that she couldn’t connect with others’ humanity." Working with actors like Jeremy London and David Kallaway added another layer of depth to her performance. "Jeremy and I had worked together before, so that was a great dynamic. And with David, he’s a good friend of mine. He plays this rough biker in the movie, but in real life, he’s like the biggest teddy bear," she says with a smile. Sanchez’s role in Captain America: Brave New World is another highlight in her impressive resume. While the stunts in the film weren’t particularly challenging for her, the experience of working on a massive blockbuster with seasoned professionals was unforgettable. "I got to be part of some of the larger action sequences, and it was such a fun time because I was working with friends I’ve known for years. Plus, getting to share the set with legends like Harrison Ford was surreal!"For Sanchez, the secret to success in these action-packed films lies in teamwork. "You have to trust your team when it comes to stunts, especially when you’re working on something dangerous. You need to trust that everyone knows what they’re doing to ensure a safe and smooth shoot." As a skilled stunt performer and actress, Sanchez is excited about the evolution of women in the action genre. "I love that I’ve been given opportunities to bridge the gap between stunt women and actresses," she says. "I look up to women like Zoe Bell and Monique Ganderton , who’ve paved the way for us. I want to take on more roles where I get to be a badass while also acting." The shift in the industry is evident, as more films are embracing diversity, not only in gender but also in race. "It’s not just about the action anymore. Stories are becoming more meaningful, and that’s what I love," Sanchez explains. "Movies should tell important stories, and I’m honored to be a part of that." In addition to acting and stunts, Sanchez has also taken on the role of producer. She finds the challenge of balancing producing with acting exhilarating. "Producing is like doing a giant puzzle. You gather all the pieces, and then you make sure everything fits together to create a beautiful picture," she explains. "It can be hard to juggle, especially when I’m both acting and producing in the same project, but I love the challenge." Her first big producer credit was for the film Open , where she played a lead role while also taking on producing responsibilities. "There were days when I’d wrap a long shoot, and instead of relaxing, I’d be checking the call sheets and making sure everything for the next day was in place. But it’s all worth it because it’s rewarding to see a project come to life." As Sanchez continues to take on major roles, she remains grounded and enthusiastic about her future in the industry. "This year, I’ve got a lot of exciting projects coming up," she shares. Captain America: Brave New World is just one of the many releases that fans can look forward to. She’s also excited about The Neglected , a detective thriller she stars in alongside Josh Duhamel, and The Seventh Turn , a short film she produced about emotional abuse and gaslighting. In the world of big blockbusters and indie films, Sanchez’s versatility shines through. "I think you need to do it all," she says of her experiences in both realms. "The big movies give you the chance to work with amazing people and see how everything comes together, while indie films offer more creative freedom. Both have their place, and both are important in different ways."Sanchez isn’t just looking at more action-packed roles; she has her sights set on a new genre. "I’d love to do a romantic comedy or a Christmas movie. I’ve been watching a ton of those Netflix Christmas movies, and they seem so fun. I’m putting it out into the universe now—casting directors, I want to do a Netflix Christmas movie!" As an actress, stunt performer, and producer, Elena Sanchez continues to prove that the key to success in Hollywood is a combination of talent, hard work, and the ability to embrace every opportunity that comes her way. Through her diverse range of roles, Sanchez shows no signs of slowing down, and her future in the industry looks brighter than ever. Each field allows me to explore different facets of my personality and connect with others in unique ways," Linda shares. "Storytelling, whether through acting or fashion, is a powerful medium, and I love being part of that narrative." Linda’s journey began in a unique direction, with a background in biology. "Studying biology taught me the importance of discipline and analytical thinking, which I apply to my creative work. It also gave me a unique perspective on the world, blending science with art. This background helps me approach design with a sense of structure while allowing my creativity to flourish." The 1901 Collection: Empowering Women Through Fashion A key turning point in Linda's career came when she founded The 1901 Collection , a swimwear line that reflects her commitment to style and empowerment. "I was inspired to start The 1901 Collection after realizing that swimwear should be both stylish and empowering," she explains. "I want my designs to make women feel confident, beautiful, and comfortable in their own skin. It’s all about celebrating individuality and body positivity." Linda also speaks to the evolving nature of the fashion industry, particularly with the rise of digital platforms. "The rise of digital platforms has revolutionized the fashion industry, making it more accessible for aspiring creatives. Social media allows people to showcase their talents and connect with audiences directly, which I think is fantastic," she says. "It’s a double-edged sword, though; while it’s easier to pursue passions, the pressure to maintain an online presence can be overwhelming." As a mother, Linda has a clear focus on maintaining a balance between her family life and career. "Balancing my career with family life is a constant juggling act," she admits. "I prioritize my schedule, often involving my family in my work. We have family meetings to discuss our commitments, ensuring we support each other while making time for fun and relaxation." Linda also plays the role of ‘momager,’ ensuring her sons are grounded and focused on the right values. I encourage them to pursue their dreams while reminding them that success is not just about fame but also about being kind and authentic." For Linda, motherhood is a significant influence on her career. “Being a mother has profoundly influenced my professional life. It drives me to create a legacy of empowerment and support for my children and others," she shares. "I focus on causes that promote youth development and mental health, as I believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive." Linda has valuable advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. "My advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to stay true to your vision and be adaptable. The digital landscape is ever-changing, so embrace technology and engage with your audience authentically," she says. "Build a community around your brand, and don’t be afraid to take risks." When it comes to her designs, Linda emphasizes a balance between style and comfort in The 1901 Collection . "In The 1901 Collection, I prioritize both style and comfort. I envision a woman who is confident, active, and unapologetically herself. My designs reflect that spirit, combining chic aesthetics with practical elements that fit into her lifestyle." Linda is also selective about the collaborations she takes on, ensuring they align with her values and aesthetic. "When choosing partnerships, I look for brands that align with my values and aesthetic. It’s essential to maintain my personal brand while collaborating, so I ensure that any partnership feels authentic and resonates with my audience." Linda’s reality TV experience on Au Pairs has been an eye-opening one, with both rewards and challenges. "Being on Au Pairs has been an incredible journey. Having my family involved adds a layer of authenticity, but it also challenges my work-life balance," she reflects. "I’ve learned to set boundaries and prioritize what truly matters, ensuring that my family remains my anchor amidst the chaos." The impact of sharing her family life with viewers has been overwhelmingly positive. "The most rewarding part of sharing my family life on Au Pairs has been the connection with viewers," Linda shares. "It’s heartwarming to hear how our experiences resonate with others and inspire them in their own lives." Linda is well aware of the pressures that come with public attention. "Staying grounded in the public eye requires a strong support system and self-awareness," she says. "I focus on my values and surround myself with people who uplift me. Practicing gratitude and mindfulness also helps me navigate the pressures of fame."She also addresses a common misconception about reality TV: "A common misconception is that reality TV isn’t scripted or staged. While there are elements of production, some elements are genuine." Despite her busy schedule, Linda makes time for activities that nourish her creativity and well-being. "I carve out time for hobbies like singing, drawing, and roller skating as a form of self-care," she says. "These activities recharge my spirit and keep me connected to my creative side, which is essential for my overall well-being." Her personal journey has been one of perseverance and resilience. "I believe in the power of perseverance. There have been challenges along my journey, but each one has taught me resilience," she reflects. "I’ve learned that setting goals and working hard can lead to incredible opportunities, no matter the obstacles." Looking ahead, Linda has big plans for her brand and her impact on the world. "In the next five years, I see myself expanding The 1901 Collection and possibly launching a lifestyle brand," she shares. "I’m excited about new collaborations and projects that empower women and promote self-love." - Guyviuad Joseph’s Multifaceted Path to Success: Zatima, Hard Work, and Everything In Between
In a world where passion often battles practicality, Guyviaud Joseph chose to follow his heart. A successful corporate professional, Joseph’s pivot to acting wasn’t just a career change—it was a bold decision that transformed his life. Joseph, best known for his role as Tony on the hit series Sistas , has since become a rising star in the entertainment world. But his journey to this point wasn’t as simple as jumping into auditions. It was a path marked by reflection, risk, and a deep connection to his roots. Words by Angel Neal Photography by Shannon Wallace Joseph recalls a significant moment in 2009-2010 when the U.S. economy was in crisis. “It was a moment of reset for me,” he explains. “So many friends were telling me that if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, you need to follow your passion.” For Joseph, his passion was acting. Although he had been performing in school plays since his college days, it took a financial crisis for him to finally take the leap. “I realized that I couldn’t keep balancing both [acting and corporate work]. If I truly wanted to act, I had to step away from the corporate world,” he says. “So, I took the steps to walk away and create a strategy for my career moving forward.” Taking that leap of faith wasn’t easy. “A lot of people are scared to make that career change,” Joseph admits. “But the advice I’d give is to have faith—faith in yourself and in your talents.” Raised by parents who were both ministers, Joseph’s faith in himself and his spiritual beliefs provided a solid foundation to move forward. “Once I knew I could believe in myself, I didn’t need a Fortune 500 company behind me,” he says. “It sounds easier than it really is, but that faith was the key to making that move.” As a Haitian American actor, Joseph brings his cultural background into the roles he takes on. He explains, “Knowing my roots has shaped how I approach roles. It’s about staying true to my values—there are certain roles I just wouldn’t take because they go against who I am as a person.” One such role was that of “Biscuit,” a gay character he portrayed on Power . While it was a challenge, Joseph used his personal values to guide his portrayal. “I’ve been through therapy and growth, and I try to bring that into my roles,” he says. “For me, it’s about using media for positive change and offering perspectives that help, not harm.” As Tony on Zatima, Joseph’s character started as a friend who didn’t approve of Zach and Fatima’s relationship. But this season, Tony's character takes on a more prominent role. “You’re going to see Tony deal with real-life circumstances, things that people can relate to,” Joseph teases. “It’s about growth. Tony is no longer on the outside looking in—he’s a part of the chaos now.” Joseph also hints at the development of Tony’s friendships, particularly with Zach. “Tony is now a defender of Zach and Fatima’s relationship,” he says. “He realizes that Fatima is the best thing for Zach, and now Tony is there as a support system.” But the real growth comes when Tony faces his own personal struggles. “It’s easier to give advice than to follow it,” Joseph reflects. “In this season, Tony has to learn that sometimes the best way to be a friend is to let someone go through their own struggles and be there to support them after.” Guyviaud's strong relationships with his castmates are key to creating believable, grounded performances. “We take our work seriously, but we also respect each other’s process,” he says. For example, during the filming of emotionally charged scenes, Joseph would sometimes keep his distance from his co-stars, like Devale Ellis, to stay in character. “There’s a level of respect and freedom,” Joseph explains. “If one of us is going through something emotionally, we understand if we don’t communicate as much. It’s about staying in character.” When asked how he prepares for intense, high-stakes scenes, Joseph talks about staying grounded. “When you're portraying a character dealing with multiple emotions, you have to get into the right headspace,” he says. “Fear, anger, hope—they all come at once. I dig into that to bring authenticity to the scene.” Joseph’s method involves understanding his character’s motivations deeply, which allows him to react naturally when the cameras roll. Advice for Aspiring Actors: Dedication to the Craft For those looking to break into acting, Joseph emphasizes the importance of dedication. “The most important quality an actor can have is dedication to the work,” he states. “You need to commit to the craft, whether that means taking acting classes, studying scripts, or understanding the industry. The work doesn’t stop once the cameras start rolling—it’s about putting in the hours behind the scenes, too.” He also stresses the importance of staying current in the ever-changing industry, particularly with the rise of social media-driven careers. “You have to keep your finger on the pulse,” Joseph says. “Whether you want to be on TV, film, or even social media, you need to understand how to get in front of the right people and keep evolving.” Joseph is also expanding his entrepreneurial endeavors. “Me and my fiancée started a CMOS company called Alice Spicy Moss,” he shares. The health-conscious couple launched the venture during the pandemic, and it’s been a hit ever since. “CMOS is something that’s been part of our culture for years, but we wanted to help change the stigma around it and get it out to more people,” Joseph says. In addition to this, Joseph stays active by working out regularly, which helps him stay grounded. He credits his workouts with maintaining both his physical and mental health. “I love working out—it keeps me focused and helps manage stress,” he says. “Plus, it’s great to stay connected with the community.” Looking to the future, Joseph is excited about the types of roles he’d like to pursue. “I want to continue doing drama, but also incorporate action and comedy,” he says. “I love physical roles that let me use both my emotional and physical range.”Joseph’s versatility as an actor has already led him to work on a variety of projects. “There’s a film I’m producing called Hearsay , which looks at solutions for the issues African Americans face with law enforcement. I’m also working on a Scooby-Doo-inspired horror film called Regulars ,” he reveals. As a producer, Joseph is expanding his creative reach. “I started as a production assistant and worked my way up,” he says. “Now, I’m creating projects that control the narrative and offer new perspectives.” Joseph’s journey from the corporate world to Hollywood is a testament to the power of faith, dedication, and knowing when to take the leap. As Tony continues to evolve on Zatima , we can only imagine where Guyviaud Joseph's career will go next. THOUGHTS ON On Using His Influence “I believe in using my influence to help reshape the narrative about success,” says Guyviaud Joseph. “There are so many successful Black people in this country, and it’s not as difficult to be successful as many might think. You just have to do the work.” Guyviaud emphasizes that success doesn’t require a secret formula—rather, it demands strategy, hard work, and a commitment to passion. On Success Guyviaud’s thoughts on success echo this simplicity: “Success isn’t as difficult as people think. You just have to be willing to create a strategy, put in the work, and pursue something you're truly passionate about.” It’s clear that for him, success isn’t measured by fame or fortune but by personal growth, dedication, and the drive to make a difference. On Prayer For Guyviaud, prayer is more than a ritual—it's a daily practice that serves as both therapy and guidance. “You should pray daily, both in the morning and at night,” he says. “Prayer helps you realign your focus, prioritize what's important, and reminds you of all the blessings you have. If you’re able to open your eyes at the start of the day, that’s a blessing in itself.” Guyviaud believes that prayer plays a crucial role in maintaining mental and emotional balance, acting as a constant reminder of life's many gifts. On Intuition Listening to one's intuition is another key pillar in Guyviaud's philosophy. “It took me a while to really understand this, and I’m still learning,” he admits. “Your intuition is the God in you telling you what's best for you. It’s easy to get distracted by external influences—ads, algorithms, and the noise of the world—but your intuition is something that you need to trust above all.” For Guyviaud, learning to listen to that inner voice is a practice that requires time and patience, but it’s one that ultimately leads to clarity and better decision-making. On Something We All Know, But Bears Repeating One of Guyviaud’s favorite concepts to share is a truth that many of us forget in the hustle of life: “No matter what problem you have, there’s always a solution out there.” He elaborates, “Every issue is just a remixed version of an old issue. There’s nothing new under the sun. If you take the time to research—whether through Google or by going to the library—you’ll find answers. The thing that often stops people from moving to the next level is that they don’t take the time to look for the solution that already exists.” In his view, knowledge is power, and reading plays a crucial role in unlocking the answers to life’s most pressing challenges. When it comes to navigating the entertainment industry, few possess the clarity and drive that Guyviaud Joseph brings to the table. A passionate advocate for Black excellence and personal growth, Guyviaud offers insights that can inspire anyone, no matter their walk of life. Through prayer, trust in your intuition, and the willingness to do the hard work, we can all find our own path to success. For Guyviaud, it’s about doing the work, being consistent, and trusting that the answers are always within reach.
- Kellie Gerardi: Breaking Barriers in Space, STEM, and Motherhood
Kellie Gerardi is a force to be reckoned with in the space industry. Not only is she an astronaut, researcher, and author, but she's also a passionate advocate for women in STEM, space, and beyond. Having made history as the 90th woman to fly to space, Gerardi's trailblazing journey is just beginning. After her successful mission in 2023 as a payload specialist aboard the Galactic 05 research flight, she’s set to lead an all-female crew aboard Virgin Galactic’s Delta class spacecraft in 2026. Along the way, she's earned a devoted following of nearly 2 million fans across social media, inspiring young women and mothers to dream big—because, as she often says, not even the sky is a limit. Photo Credit: Steven Martine Words Angel Neal When Kellie reflects on her first spaceflight, it’s clear that the experience reshaped her entire worldview. "I was incredibly well-trained from a science perspective, but nothing could have prepared me for seeing Earth with my own eyes," she admits. "It was mind-bending and profound. I experienced this intense cognitive dissonance of feeling both a part of it and slightly outside of it." The view from space left Gerardi in awe, but it also solidified her belief that space exploration is a human endeavor. "Space, and STEM, is truly a human story, and I bring that down to Earth in everything I do." This shift in perspective influences how Gerardi approaches her work in both the commercial space sector and her advocacy for young women in science. As the first woman contracted to fly on two different commercial spacecraft, she’s excited about what the future holds for women in space. “When my mom was born, human beings hadn’t yet flown to space. And when she was growing up, women weren’t eligible,” she explains. “But just one generation later, she watched her daughter reach the stars and her granddaughter take it for granted.” This generational leap fuels Gerardi’s passion for expanding access to space and making it more inclusive. “The limiter to human spaceflight has always been access, not aptitude. And that’s changing,” she says, her eyes lighting up with excitement. She’s especially thrilled by the potential for women and mothers in STEM to see space as an attainable career. For her own daughter, Delta, who is growing up with space as a natural part of her world, the sky is just the beginning. “In Delta’s mind, flying to space is just another thing girls do!” Gerardi’s career is not just about pushing boundaries in space travel; it's about advancing scientific research that can benefit humanity. During her first spaceflight, she operated complex biomedical experiments, including groundbreaking research on insulin resistance. “I wore a continuous glucose monitor—one of the first times it’s been worn in space,” she shares. “For kids diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, the doctor’s script used to say ‘don’t worry… you can be anything except an astronaut!’ I’m helping to make sure that’s no longer true.” This mission, along with others she’s planned, will contribute to making space a more inclusive and accessible laboratory for diverse populations. Looking ahead to her second mission in 2026, Gerardi is particularly excited to delve into women’s health and reproductive research, areas she’s passionate about advancing. “My next flight will be an opportunity to expand on biomedical research, especially around fluid dynamics and the impact of microgravity,” she says. “I want to demonstrate our ability to control the behavior of fluids in space, which could impact everything from spacecraft life support systems to new medical devices.” In a world where women are often expected to choose between beauty and brains, Gerardi is determined to show that you can be both—and much more. A self-proclaimed lover of fashion, space-themed accessories, and visible representation, she’s made it her mission to bring her full, authentic self to space. “Since my spaceflight, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the power of visible representation,” she says. “Fewer than 100 women in history have ever flown to space, and instead of fitting into the narrow mold society has for astronauts, I wanted to force society’s picture to expand to include me—especially as the mom of a young daughter.” Her unique style—complete with space-themed fashion and a wrist full of friendship bracelets—is just one way she challenges stereotypes about women in STEM. "Instead of conforming to what people think a woman in space should look like, I want to show that we can bring all our multitudes with us. Space, sparkle, and science can absolutely go together." Gerardi’s children’s book series *Luna Muna* encapsulates this message, introducing young girls to the idea that they can be anything, even astronauts, without sacrificing their femininity. "I wrote *Luna Muna* because there was a gap in the market for space-themed books that centered girls as the main character," she says. The series has been embraced by readers around the world, even making its way to the International Space Station and the White House. "I wanted to create a visual representation of space for girls. Luna Muna’s glittery space helmet shows them that science and sparkle can coexist." With nearly 2 million followers across Instagram and TikTok, Gerardi has become a leading voice for young women in STEM, using social media not only to share her journey but also to provide guidance and inspiration. "The most extraordinary thing about me is that I’m an ordinary person," she says. "And that kind of visible representation matters." Through her platform, Gerardi actively encourages others to dream big, break barriers, and pursue their passions without fear of failure. "When you proclaim your dreams loudly, you're going to meet resistance. But the real superpower is tuning out the discouragement and using it to fuel your motivation." Her openness about the challenges of balancing career and motherhood has also resonated deeply with her audience. "I didn’t lose my identity with pregnancy—becoming Delta’s mom only made my dreams bolder and my sense of purpose deeper,” she shares. "I want to reassure young women that they don’t have to choose between career and family. You can have both." Looking toward the future, Gerardi’s ambitions remain as high as ever. "I’m excited to continue expanding the scientific research on my upcoming mission," she says. "And I’m hoping to expand our family in the meantime." After a challenging fertility journey, Gerardi is planning to pursue fertility treatments in the winter, demonstrating that even astronauts face challenges in the pursuit of their dreams. "The work is never done," she says, her focus unwavering. "I’m always thinking about how I can help make space and STEM more accessible to future generations of women." Photo by Emily Farthington Gerardi's advice to young women aspiring to follow in her footsteps is simple: "Never give up. The limiter to spaceflight has always been access, not aptitude, and that’s changing. My dream was always bigger than just flying to space. I wanted to help open the door for the next generation of researchers. And the truly fulfilling part is holding that door open behind me." As Kellie Gerardi continues to make history, one thing is clear: her journey is just beginning. And for the millions of young girls who look up to her, space has never felt closer, nor their dreams more attainable. To keep track of all things Geradi check her out here @kelliegerardi .

We sat down with Bohan to talk about her journey in acting, her experience working on From Embers , and what’s next for this rising star. Kayla, you've been acting since you were 7 years old. What first sparked your interest in the world of acting and music? “When I was 5, I got to film some commercials. I think it's funny when I look back and see myself as a kid. I’ve always really loved performing for the camera. I think that was how things got started. That experience helped me to become who I am today. You've already accomplished so much in your career. Looking back, what do you think has been the most rewarding part of your journey so far? “The most rewarding part has definitely been the connections I’ve made and the growth I feel every day. I’m learning so much from each role, and I feel so lucky to be doing what I love. I feel like every role teaches me something new and brings me closer to my goals.” Congratulations on landing the lead role in From Embers ! Can you tell us a bit about your character and what drew you to this role? “I’m really proud of my role in From Embers . The character I play faced a lot of challenges, but I feel she’s a very strong character. I was drawn to her story because it shows the importance of family and hope, even in tough situations. That was something I could relate to and feel a lot of other people could too.” What was it like playing Matthew Morrison’s daughter on screen, and how did you both develop that father-daughter dynamic? “Playing Matthew’s daughter was amazing. He’s such a talented and generous actor. Working with him taught me a lot about connecting with my character. He showed me how important emotion is in your performance. I feel like I learned how to bring authenticity to my character, which really helped us for our on-screen time. It felt really real.” The film’s plot deals with heavy themes such as loss and the pursuit of truth. How did you approach portraying a character who experiences such deep emotional challenges? “I tried to draw from my own experiences. I feel like it’s important that the emotions feel genuine, so I think about moments in my life that connect with what my character is feeling.” What was the most challenging aspect of filming From Embers ? Was there a scene or moment that really stood out to you as particularly intense or emotional? “For me, the most emotional scene for my character was when Marty (played by Matthew Morrison) dropped me off at my mother's house. It was a really deep moment between us, and it really allowed the viewers to understand the bond between a father and daughter.” You wrote two theme songs for the film, “Maybe This is How Life Should Be” and “Panorama.” Can you walk us through the creative process behind these songs? How did you approach writing music for such a dramatic and emotional film? “Writing music for From Embers was a big step for me. I actually wrote ‘Panorama’ before meeting Matthew, and then we collaborated with him on it to make some adjustments. It was an amazing experience. I wanted the lyrics to have a sense of peace and beauty, which fits the story. I’m so happy with how it turned out.” It’s impressive that Heather Morris is performing one of your songs. How did it feel to hear your lyrics brought to life by such a talented artist? “It was amazing! Heather brought so much emotion to the song. I felt so honored to hear her perform it. She truly brought it to life in a way I couldn’t have imagined. Her voice is beautiful.” You also perform ‘Panorama’ alongside Matthew Morrison. How was it working together on that track, and what was the experience like of creating music with someone you’ve admired? “Working with Matthew on ‘Panorama’ was incredible. We both put a lot into making sure the song’s message came through. His support and ideas really helped me and the song. I feel like I grew so much as a songwriter through the process.” At just 14, you’ve achieved so much in both acting and music. How do you balance your career with school and your personal life? “I’m really focused on finding a good balance. My family and friends are so important to me. I feel like they keep me grounded. I have to put a focus on making time for school and other parts of my life too. Having a support system makes it all possible.” You’ve earned recognition for your acting in films like KAYLA and Harper , which earned you several awards. How do you stay grounded and motivated with all the success coming your way? “I always tell myself that hard work always pays off. Playing characters that remind me of myself motivate me naturally to perform my very best and to have fun on set while improving my skills along the way!” You’re clearly passionate about both acting and music. How do you see your career evolving in the next few years? Are there any other areas of the industry you’re excited to explore? “I would love to star in a comedy one day. It’s a genre I haven’t explored yet, and I think it would be so much fun! I’m also looking forward to doing more music and other projects.” What advice would you give to young aspiring actors and musicians who look up to you and want to follow in your footsteps? “Always do what you dream to do and never give up. It’s easy to be discouraged and to quit after mistakes, but everything you do will be worth it in the long run. Keep your head up and continue to work to make your dreams come true.” When you’re not working on your music or acting, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? “I’m always socializing—literally all the time with everybody. I love to talk to people about my hobbies and interests. Some of my hobbies include surfing and swimming, so I spend a lot of time in the water.” Are there any role models or artists—whether in acting or music—that you look up to and who inspire you in your career? “I honestly really look up to Zendaya. She’s young but very professional and makes herself a great role model to other teens like myself. She has a great personality. And I personally think she is a great speaker.” Since you’ve worked with some incredible people already, if you could collaborate with any artist or actor in the future, who would it be and why? “I’d like to work with Jenna Ortega one day. She’s a very creative actor and I’ve always enjoyed her performances in every project she’s been in. She’s a very talented actress and I think she would be a great partner on set.” Finally, what’s next for you after From Embers ? Are there any exciting projects or personal goals you're looking forward to? “There’s a lot going on. Some of it I’m unable to give any spoilers. But I am very much looking forward to a project where I get to collaborate with other teens my age and am able to have the best time on set. Something like Outer Banks , where the shooting takes place in the summer, would be a dream project.” With her talent, ambition, and determination, Kayla Bohan is certainly a young star to watch in the years to come.
